Hi

Heartened by the number of you guys who have had a listen to my improv stuff, I've been working all day on some more of the same (yet another 'album' that only myself and about 3 other people, with funny ears, will ever listen to).

These two tracks are very different from each other, but they are what they are: one spiky, one smooth.

Nice weekend listening.

I like both tracks. In each I heard many events and subtleties that were interesting and pleasing to me.

Thanks John and Gary! I'm assuming 'baller' is a positive? Two countries separated by a common language, and all that.

Interesting John that you mention events in the music. I've written two books on improvisation (which is two too many), and 'The Event' increasingly became the focus. That is to say, something intangible that all of these localised events within the music point towards, but which is not directly present. OK, I'll shut up now and go and play my steel, much more fun than writing books.

Thanks again both.

I ordered a copy of your second book based on its Introduction and some of your other writings I found on line.

I'll be interested to see what light the book may shed.

Interestingly, "event" is not a term I generally use in connection with music. In writing my post I originally used some other word (I forget which) that didn't seem quite right, and "event" was the term I came up with as a replacement, and which seemed to work in the context of your music.

That's great John. A word of warning: parts of the book are pretty hard going (even for me, and I wrote it!). Here's a tip: if you get exasperated, jump to one of the 'memoirs' or 'case studies' until you regain your composure; they're a relatively easy read, and even quite hilarious in places (but then I've got a rather perverse sense of humour!).

And a Merry Christmas to you and everyone else who have been kind enough to listen and comment over the last year...much appreciated.

Gary

Nice pieces, Gary!

Wondering about the books you wrote - links, previews, ordering if so desired?

And Merry Christmas to you.

Thanks Daniel...and yes, Merry Christmas.

You can get my books on Amazon. Just punch in my name and Improvisation (otherwise you'll get your Democratic politician).

For a taster of my writing exploits, check the link below out. There's enough there to keep you going for a while! Incidentally, the only time I ever mention the pedal steel is in the first piece (my Inaugural Lecture), where Ralph Mooney is the central theme. Perversely, my inaugural lecture was the last lecture I ever gave, and my last piece of writing...so a strange inauguration!

Quite the academic, Gary! Superb.
I'm not well steeped in philosophy - would your books be accessible for general readers?

Hi Daniel

Put it this way: my writings on improvisation were intended for philosophers interested in improvisation rather than improvisers interested in philosophy. Although, having said that, my last book 'Improvising Improvisation', does contain many 'memoir' and 'case study' chapters which are much more accessible, and quite fun at times. But, they do still require a bit of effort here and there...but that's good, right? Not everything worth thinking about is straightforward. And I thought pedal steel players were always the quiet thoughtful ones barely visible at the back of the stage...although it looks like you are quite prominent in your bands (yes, I've checked), so who knows if you're the philosophical type?

But this is all in jest...give it a go (I'm thinking of my royalties obviously).
