Friends, as for me, I hope to never ship another steel nor anything of substantial value by FedEx. I literally had to hold the phone away from my ear as the buyer screamed at me for FedEx’s destruction of the steel case.

Fellas Thank You all for speaking up, you’ve made good VALID suggestions and told a few sad stories...which is the point I was trying to make...we are all only human, we make mistakes, not everyone has a good or great work ethic, if all you’ve gotten out of this is a cautionary tale...it’s served its purpose, you can’t over protect an expensive Quality Pedal Steel, or any instrument or item...

All, on behalf of our hard working employees at these said agencies, I would like to apologize to anyone that have been snookered or even mistreated during the shipment process. As an avid shipper of many pedal steel guitars(some even sent oversees) it is imperative that the guitar is prepped for shipping, inside and outside. To do this the person shipping has to be very knowlegable on what they are shipping and the potential bumpy road ahead and pack accordingly. But never the less sometimes (Hypothetically speaking, 1 out of 100 items might get "altered")accidents happen. The companies will fight to not 6 grand for that new MSA or Sierra; just think if everyone put in 6,000 dollar claims. But all in all, good sound packing and prayer goes a long way. Let's continue to support our "support agencies" because its what we have. If a frog can't praise his own pond.....(for whatever that's worth)........Merry Christmas and Blessings my fellow steel players.

The Truth is this...any guitar being shipped by any of the Big 3-4 shippers, UPS, DHL, USPS, FED X, all have conveyer belts that all packages are put on to go from one department or place to another, these conveyers have at least a 3’ to 4’ drop off that these packages fall off of...I was made aware of this after personally asking these people who actually work at these Stores, also the further a package of ANY SIZE has to go, whether its from New York to Pa. or Maine to California, the more conveyors they will encounter...so be aware! It is what it is my friends...and even though we take every precaution even purchasing Insurance, it does not negate the probability that your precious guitars, banjos, pedal steels, mandolins, ALL WILL TAKE A RIDE ON A CONVEYOR, (or Conveyors) AND ALL WILL EXPERIENCE A DROP-OFF AT THE END! Also in closing, these shippers are all run by “HUMAN BEINGS” who sometimes have good and bad days...and don’t count on the big name shippers to pay off an Insurance claim...it just don’t always work in our favor...more often than not, IT DOES NOT!

Jeffery, that is why I shipped mine via Greyhound bus, when I sold my old steel to a guy in NC, a few years back. Yes, there was damage to the case but, they reimbursed him, and the guitar was in one piece, when he picked it up. So there is that option.

Still, we shouldn't label your particular case or cases as, that's what always happens. To alleviate any thing going wrong, you will have to do a road trip and pickup your item and trek on back home. But just trust these services to do their jobs.

It may have been mentioned in the numerous replies, but just in case.........

Have the item shipped HOLD FOR PICK UP if possible.

1) If you pick it up at the UPS/etc facility, you can get a pretty good idea looking at the case if it has been dropped, run over by a fork lift, used for target practice, etc.
If you have any suspicions you can open it right there at the facility.
Once you take it off the premises, as far as UPS/etc is concerned, YOU did the damage, not them.

2) If they deliver it to your residence, and you are not at home, they may just leave your new Franklin (wishful thinking) on your doorstep, out in the open, for everybody passing by to see. Need I say more?

An alternative that hasn't been mentioned........

I see a lot of ads on here recently saying WILLING TO DRIVE XXX MILES TO DELIVER or similar.

How much does it cost to ship a steel?
How much is the hassle worth if it's damaged?
Is it worth the cost of gas and a hotel room for one night?

If possible, I'd opt for doing this scenario.

For USPS Shipping within USA Try Registered Mail - The most protected service they offer.

1st the package is hand carried throughout the entire trip, no conveyors.

2nd if the parcel is not delivered it is locked up in a special safe location until the next leg of the journey.

3rd, they will insure up to 25 thousand usd.

4th Every person who handles the parcel must sign for their part including truck drivers.

5th if the parcel is lost , you can go to the local postmaster where is was posted and they can find it in less than a few hours via telephone.

6th if there is a damage claim this is the most likely means to collect on.

Packing tape is not acceptable for this , you must use reinforced paper tape, and have every possible seam covered. The Post office will put a ton of little date stamps on every seam to prove no tampering took place.

For international use the USPS Global Express, their guaranteed short day service. Again , high coverage and collectibility, extremely fast service, and increased size and weight allowances.

I once sent a D8 in a pelican case to Australia and it got there to the end client -- in less that 48 hours from Sandy Eggo.

Fast forward to recent times , During the political slow down BS - I sent a high end lap steel to Norway, with Express Priority Mail(supposed to be 5 days to end destination), it took 8 days to get from Albuquerque to Los Angles - 21 days to get processed and placed on an airline, after arriving in Norway, it was held in quarantine for another 21 days but finally arrived in perfect condition.

Moral of Story; Pay for a Better Service - they do exist.
