From what I can find searching the forum; It seems like everyone that uses the V8 Octal also uses the black box. I am thinking about getting a V8 but am trying to eliminate steps and clutter in my light weight setup. Usually I go: Guitar, Volume pedal, Twin Reverb.

Is the Chain: Guitar, VP, Reverb, V8, Powered Cabinet a reasonable one? The more stuff the more I can mess up my sound and I seem to be good at that.

Thanks.

I've used a V8 without black box with great results though I'm using a buffered telonics volume pedal! I even own a black box and fine without using it with the V8. Amazing sound from V8!

I use guitar, black box, volume pedal, V8, everything else...

The pickup still likes to see that Black Box first to maintain a stable impedance load, and the Vari-Z works really well to tweek that balance/tone. It's really not very subtle, at least on the single coil pickups I use.

The whole point of the Black Box or the other buffers out there is to keep the volume pedal from loading the pickup variably. Some folks like that effect, others don't. So it just depends. I like having the buffer.

Patrick.

There are actually a bunch of players that find the V8's octal tubes SO warm and sweet and tubes that they are ok NOT using a Black Box. The FreeLoader works really well as a buffer up front in that setup, but really any good volume pedal is gonna sound great thru the V8. Black Box not required.

I too use both. Even though the V8 sounds great without the black box, there is still something about using the black box that adds slightly more smoothness to the already great tone.

I've tried several ways to improve my tone, but so far, the black box, Telonics pedal, V8 into the rear of a Vegas 400 (using only the amp and bypassing the amp's EQ) with a TT15 speaker, has the best tone, to my ears. My playing, not so much, but it makes my wrong notes have a better tone. Laughing Laughing

When using just the black box into a solid state amp, I can hear a subtle change in tone when turning the Vari-z knob from full left to full right, but the difference becomes not so subtle at all when the black box is used in front of the V8.

But like Brad said, the Black box isn't required in front of the V8.

Just my experience with them. YMMV.

Also, to answer your question, in my opinion the chain: Guitar, VP, Reverb, V8, Powered Cabinet is reasonable. The only thing I would change in the chain if you were to use a black box, is to put the black box right after the guitar.

Thanks Larry. I just recorded again using all the same gear except I didn't use an iphone to record. I think this sounds more like what I'm hearing as I'm playing. The Black Box and V8 is a really great combo, but it takes a few other pieces to complete the rig.

The prominent buzzing before I start playing is the fan on the Peavey power amp. Once I start it gets totally buried. The Sarno gear is virtually dead quiet.

Pauls examples are excellent. Spectacular tone even with the 1st inferior recording setup. Could this be the magic box? Ha. At any rate it's all good.
