The phrase Buddy plays starting at 0:46 on the attached video has always frustrated me because it sounds like it's double tracked. He's playing a descending phrase but there's another lick being played along with it that doesn't sound like you could play both at the same time the descending phrase is being played.

Dick,
I can only give you a clue. This was shown to me in a lesson years ago when the Expedition E9 Tape came out.
The tune is 'This Cold War With You' in G and the chord sequence here is C to E7.
The 'other melody' is done on an open string while the bar is descending.
I never did pursue learning it, but you've sparked a new interest.
Cheers,
George Webb

... and as I think more about it, it should be in the tab that was available with the 'Expediton E9' |

Dick,
You're very welcome. I just amended the first post, I had the key and chords wrong.
Cheers,
George |

Just happened to have the tab to Expo E9 nearby.
Here's the passage on "This Cold War With You" you're hearing - at about 2:30 on Expo E9. Buddy's lick live sounds more complicated but this might point you in the right direction.

Here's a super clear view of the picking and bar details from an overhead shot, played slowly so the detailed pedal actuations stand out, starting at 1:09:

Jimmy Day played this many years ago on record and there's a real nice version of it on the Dicky Overbey CD HonkyTonkMemories.com.

Very cool! That is some really sneaky stuff - the tab-writer's nightmare. |

Thanks Greg. That gave me an idea of what's going on but it doesn't look like buddy is pulling the bar back as he descends. It's not the clearest video so maybe he's doing it but I can't see it. _________________ Cops aren't paid much so I steel at night. |
