What are the best pickup options for Emmons Push Pulls? First choice being factory original single coil pickups but those seem to be hard to find these days. What are some other good options? Also what ohm recommendations are best for Emmons push pulls?
I appreciate any thoughts and suggestions.

It's hard to beat the pickups they came out of the factory with. I was told by someone who should know that the Emmons pickups were built one (or two) at a time, specifically for each instrument as it was being constructed. The factory did not stockpile pickups. The person who assembled the guitar wound the pickup(s) as an integral step as it was built. |

I always liked the Emmons Single Coils until I used the Telonics X10. Got them in all my Emmons's (PP and All Pulls) now and it sounds great in all of them. E9th and C6th side. |

BL 705’s are excellent on a push pull. Doesn’t have to be the older chrome ones either. The new 705’s are great. _________________ Henry Matthews

Jack Hanson -
Would your source know if BE was involved in specifying the ohms that each E9 and C6 single coil pickup was to be originally wound to?
That kind of 'Emmons minutia' is interesting to me...
Thanks,

I have two Emmons'. One has the original single coil pickups from the factory. I bought the steel from the original owner. My second emmons I bought with a 705 on the e9th. But to me it was very very tinny and bright, almost took your head off even on low volumes. I had an extra factory single coil that I swapped out the 705 with and that straightened things out quite a bit. I dont like mellow sounding pedal steel, so my both of my emmons' have the perfect highs to me.
Also I never had a problem with the noise of the single coils, probably just me.
Also tried the True Tone pickups too. Not bad great pickups.
I would suggest to Craig that you try and experiment with a couple of pickups until you come across one that produces your favorite sound. I know its time consuming and you'd have to buy a couple of pickups, but buy one at a time, install it and try it out, if it is not satisfactory, then sell it and buy another until you find 'that sound'. Kinda what I did. |

I agree with Duane, I have Emmons'74 and '76 D-10s with stock pickups, never had a problem with them. Then I bought a Mullen PRP D-10 with a BL 710 on the E9 neck and was really impressed with the different tone. So I started experimenting with a BL XLR16, a 910 and eventually a 710 on the PP '72 E9 neck. It did not at all sound the same, or as good IMO, as either the 710 on the Mullen or the original stock pickup. I used the '76 as a reference with each change since the two Emmons sounded pretty much the same originally. I now also have a Zum D-10 with 705s on both necks that sound terrific - but I now know that sometimes pickups sound differently on different guitars. It's worth experimenting but be ready to consider the original pickup might be best. _________________ 2008 Zum D-10, 1996 Mullens PRP D-10, 1974 Emmons D-10, 1976 Emmons D-10, early 70s Emmons GS-10, Milkman Sideman head w/Telonics 15" speaker, 1966 Fender Super Reverb, 1970 Fender Dual Showman head, Wechter/Scheerhorn and Beard Dobros, 1962 Supro lap steels, Gibson 1939 RB-11 banjo, Gibson 1978 RB-250

Hard to say for certain, Ron. But he likely would have an opinion. I'll check with him and report back. |

It has been my experience that the marriage between a guitar and the pickup is unpredictable as what combination sounds good in one guitar may not sound good in another of the same models- go figure. |

Ditto, and I'd extend that to a lot of Fender guitars I've owned over the years. The 'mojo' (or lack of) is somewhat random...
That said, I really prefer the Emmons original single coils in the P/Ps I own. |

How about the CE10 pickup by Scott Schwartz? Looks like a good choice.

I have a Telonics in my most played p/p. Amazing tone, no hum. If you’re not a single coil purist, I don’t know how you fare too much better. I know they’re buck or two, but I’ve never sat behind my steel and thought they weren’t worth the price of admission. |

|

I have a D-10 74 Emmons pp with the original single coil pickups. I also have a 75 SD-10 that came with a George L E-66. It sounded real good, but didn't have the single coil clear sound. I replaced it with an original Emmons single coil. I put a Telonics in my Zum, but didn't care for it. So I put the original single coil back in.
If I couldn't find an original single coil, I would try one of the Scott Schwartz Emmons single coil reproductions. If I were going to a humbucker, I would try the Lawrence 705.
Single coil hum is not a problem. In over 50 years of playing, I only had two venues that if was a problem. My Elecro Harmonix Hum De-Bugger solved the problem at both places. The pick up was as quiet as a mouse peeing on a cotton ball. It doesn't change your tone either. I always have it with me just in case.

Thanks to everyone for all the replies. How can I contact Scott Schwartz for his Emmons single coil reproduction pickups? _________________ ________________
