Just wondering instead of practicing...
Does or did anyone ever do a double 6 string tuning on a 12 string lap, like C6 and E9 next to each other or something similar to that? Not a universal tuning but basically a double 6 made into a 12?
I guess the muting issues would be pretty extreme.
Just popped into my head. |

Not me. But if I'm not mistaken, I believe Bobby Black plays a 12 string with the following tuning (Low to Hi): Bb,D,F,A,C,E,G,A,C,E,B,D. And I think the bottom 2 and top 2 strings are re-entrant. Reece Anderson played a 10-string tuned (Low to Hi): Bb,C,E,G,A,C,E,G,B,D with the top 2 re-entrant. |

E9 Lower 6: BDEF#G#B
C6: CEGACE
Rather stringing them up as re-entrants, look what you get if you string up in order of pitch low to high:
B C D E F# G G# A B C E
That’s only 11. The 12th string could be a low A or high D, or anything really.
This has some similarity to the Alkire E-harp tuning, with those chromatics in the middle. But all your C6 and E9 straight bar stuff is still there, however spaced a little differently. Plus, all 7 diatonic triads in the Key of G are there. I might try this one myself, if I ever get a 12 string. Thanks for the idea |

For some reason this reminds me of how some Chapman sticks are tuned, with 2 sets of strings tuned high on the outside with bass strings in the middle

Muting issues: you mean getting the string tops level? _________________ - keyless Sonny Jenkins laps stay in tune forever!; Carter PSG

Just that between C6 and E9 you have g g# and a so the risk of picking the wrong string or having one ringing out seems magnified. |

I'm actually kind of surprised no one has tried this sort of thing. I'm wondering now what would be the advantage of a double 6 vs just having two six string tunings side by side on one 12 string neck? |

I tried it on a 14 stringer I have. Doesn't work too well. problem is the thicker gauge of the lower strings on the upper 6 get in the way when trying to move around the neck. |

You might be waiting for a while! But I have been thinking about making some cheap steels out of pine so who knows. Certainly would have a lot of possibilities. |

If you are going to combine tunings it makes a lot of sense to combine related tunings together. I have a 10 String tuned to E13 B, D, E, F#, G#, B, C#, E, G#, F# |
