This 1950's long scale 25 fret Rickenbacker was pretty corroded when it arrived last month. Although mostly original and unmolested the controls were gummed with oil and the nut and bridge chipped and deeply grooved. I stripped it down and took it to Mizell Music in Hagerstown. Larry is the master brass instrument repairman. He polished it and baked the clear lacquer finish. The pickup mount was sent to Elkhart IN to be nickel plated. New CTS 250 ohm pots and a Russian .047 oil and paper cap is installed. The Shoes are from a donor 100 and I plan to have the old ones redone. Classic Ric voice. Plenty of volume. The tone control goes from a little to deep to a little to bright with no loss of volume. Good for another 70+ years. Here are some before and after shots.

| Would the flying saucer tone and vol. knobs be original? I like the round aluminum tone and vol. knobs shown in the early photos.. They are probably original. I've seen these knobs on other guitars of this era and I think make this guitar even more special. |

great work! was that one of keoki's?
If you need another nut I think I have an extra. well not really "extra" but you get my drift. I'd rather it get used than sit in my spare parts pile. |

| Mr George Lake was the previous owner along with Tommy H from AU. The knurled knobs are Sears and Roebuck according to an old forum post. The saucers are correct. Ryan I purchased a Bakelite electric box and cut out the new nut and saddle. There’s plenty left, thanks. The tuners are from StewMac and are close to the originals. I had to eclipse the mounting holes rather than disturb the one’s tapped into the headstock, #3x48. |

| i guess bakelite is traditional material concearning rick guitars. did the originals use steel nut & inserts? it would be interesting to hear the difference between steel & bakelite. what about delrin? my clinesmith pan has steel nut & saddle |

I had two '30s frypans and both had metal nuts and bridge saddles. One had what looked like a replacement nut (metal), but as I recall the metal on the rest was brass. Bakelite (or what ever that material is on the back plate and nut is) was used on post-war models.
I wondered if that was George's (Keoki's) frypan when I saw the sticker. George used to say of his frypan that it looked like someone used it as a canoe paddle! Nice restoration! |

| Because it was owned by a well know player I had a decision to make. In the long run this piece of history will be around in 100 years if cared for. The level of oxidation was beginning to pit the aluminum so I chose to have it restored. In 20 years I will be 90 and someone will get a good guitar. |

I've looked around and I think you will find, it's cheaper to buy a new one. Walmart has some nice ones!
