My 12-stringers have a temporary friend.

The GFI in the foreground is on its way to my grandson who has expressed an interest in learning. Officially it's my spare instrument for gigs that don't require a uni (none) so he will have it on indefinite loan. I acquired it from Colm Murray in Ireland who is a good man to deal with - helpful and honest.

The GFI is often criticised for its lack of charm, which is pointless as it clearly sets out to be functional and is apparently indestructible. I've changed the copedent so that it matches my unis, the idea being that the youngster will be able to play my guitars when he visits, and it's a setup worth considering anyway.

I have basically the same copedant on the E9 neck of my MCI. It avoids a lot of confusion when I switch to my Mullen U12. Hope your grandson gets a lot of enjoyment out of it. What a great heritage to pass on to him.

Personally I find the low G# way more useful than the 9th string D. I didn't stick with straight E9 for long enough to become dependent on that D, and on a uni it has to go anyway.

Does having that B to D require a lot of lever throw Ian? Nice coped mate!

It's reasonable, not excessive.
It's a good setup if you also play a uni 12, and the low G# gives it depth.

I get my D by lowering string 8 a full tone.

On my unis I also do that, as it's part of the B6 tuning.

I didn't bother on this E9. It's a nice change to have and I admit I was tempted, but I wanted to keep it simple. If my grandson spots that I have it and he doesn't, I might give in!
