Howdy!

I'm curious what y'all's experiences and opinions of sitar bars are. I've heard some recordings of (what I think are) players using them and it seems cool enough to experiment with at the very least.
What are your go to bars?

Jeremy, a few years ago I ordered one from Jim Burden--but I am not sure if he is still is in business.

For a sitar sound, hold the bar very loosely.

Also gets sort of a bottle-neck blues guitar sound.

I like to use a sitar bar now and again. The best sounding one I have is a 1" Dunlop bar. I prefer a 7/8" and now the 1" feels unwieldy and giant. I have a few different bars from Michael Hillman and the one I most regularly use is the one shown here. I still like the tone of the Dunlop best but this one feels great and certainly gets the job done. If you're looking for one, I can recommend it.

Reminds me - a patron at the bar I was playing my pedal steel at asked me if I was playing a "sitar".....logical question I guess. I was sitting. Smile

I have an Emmons 'Sitar' bar made by Emmons. It is standard 7/8" dia, 10 string bar that was ground down and machined with ~1/4" flat side, and grooves in that flat part to enhance the Sitar sound. Easy to do, just roll bar to flat place for sitar and roll back for normal play.

I'm not using it any more, it is like new and would sell it for $60 shipped.

If interested, please send me e-mail.

Thanx,
Jim

I had a friend who runs a machine shop mill down an extra Emmons bar I had. Sounds great on “Norwegian Wood”. Chris is right about not using too much pressure. You can hear and feel when it’s just right.

Hey I ordered one just from reading this thread! Read about the sitar bar 2-3 years ago and tried to Google it but found nothing, thought nobody made them anymore.

Bought one from Hillman (link on this thread) and came in a couple days. Nice quality, sounds neat and sure enough, you have to press it down just right but it is easy.

Now will I ever use it on a gig?
