Hey guys. Which pups are you guys liking on the new MSA's with the interchangeable pick ups. On which neck? I have tried 3 so far on E9 ......the 705, X10 and the 206. After a blend adjustment on my amp.......I really like the X10.

Dale, I've had 5 -

XR16---Ehh!!!
409----Didn't like
X10----Nice, but don't use
705----Like it and used it for a long time, first in my Quad pup Mullen then MSA & Rittenberry
710----Love it, I know that the 705 seems to be favored by a lot of really great Pro's, but since I started using the 710 up front, I can't pull it out of there. Not cause it's stuck, It pulls out quite easy, I just don't want to pull it out.

The new one is going to get the 206 up front ... Both Mitchell Smithey and Johnny Cox sound great with it.
And I'll probably put a 710 in the back.

I have 5 different pickups for my newer MSA's and I tend to use the Alumitone on the E9th neck, I seldom play the C6th neck so it doesn't make much difference what I use on it. Some may not agree but in my opinion, there's really not much difference in the sound of any modern pickups.

Also a Zum D10, a Mullen RP, and a restored Rose S10, named the "Blue Bird". Also, I have acquired and restored the plexiglass D10 MSA Classic that was built as a demo in the early '70s. I also have a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks, and a showroom condition Sho-Bud Super Pro.

I'm with Darvin - I've tried Tone Aligners (no longer available), 705, and most recently the X-10. The Tone Aligners always end up back in their. A good vintage tone to my ear, with the best string separation of any of them. Differences are subtle to me - someone in the audience probably wouldn't even notice. But We do, of course.

I have both the 705 and 206 and I find the 206 is a little warmer and the 705 a little more open and brighter. I like both and enjoy being able to change them on the fly at a gig.

Started out with Truetone in 2017 and went with a 705 earlier this year. It seems to liven up my tone. I play an SD-10 Studio Pro.

My new MSA is nearly finished, and I selected 705 pickups after a trial at Steel Guitars of Nashville and at the MSA factory.

I've used George L E-66 pickups for nearly 30 years, but there is something in the upper mids of the 705 that has something going on that I like. Hard to explain. I feel it made my tone a little more Paul Franklin/Mike Johnson-like when I swapped to it.

I'm looking forward to putting the new guitar and pickup through it's paces soon.

To me, the marriage of a pickup and guitar is a bit of a crap shoot. The nice thing about the interchangeable part is the ease of swapping and ability to quickly compare. The problem is that you need to try a number of them b4 you find the one you want. I tried 5 and ended up selecting an E66- a clear winner in my guitar. Who woulda thunk it? Just not predictable. Then you end up with a bunch of pickups you might never use again- maybe to sell to others who are going through what you just did Smile .
