Topic: Replacement Nut for a Silver Hawaiian? |

Hey, Gang!
Has anybody ever fabricated a replacement nut for a Silver Hawaiian? Or found something to replace it short of finding one somewhere? I have a gorgeous late 30s Silver and the nut’s gone missing.
Any ideas appreciated!

| I am in the process of making a new nut and bridge for a fry pan. I purchased a Bakelite box from Morrell Electronics and cut 2x3 inch pieces of Bakelite .150 thick. Sanded down to .125 or 1/8†they are ready for shaping to a finished nut. I can send you a piece if you have the ability to fabricate a new nut. I can make one for you but I need exact dimensions. |

| Mark, I remade a steel one for my old NS. Got some square stock and got filing. Worked a treat. Heat treated it by ''bluing' which stops surface corrosion. The steel one seemed to give me nicer note separation but that maybe just an allusion. |

Do any of you all have an original nut , - even if it is broken or worn ?
I've asked here before with Zero response , for what ever weird reason ,
We have 3D Printed Bridges for these silver Hawaiians, some one generously sent so I can reverse engineer one.
I am happy to design a replacement item , if only some one would lend me one to make a new version of.

When I complete the restoration of my 1950's long scale fry pan would you like me to send the nut and bridge? They are in usable condition for duplication. |

I am glad to help the Ricky community if we can.
If you would please post a photo for me to see what they look like.
Then I can think more about making the substitute versions.
Back to the Silver Hawaiian --
I've gotten the most requests for that nut, so....
if anyone sees this and wants to help the Ricky Community keep some guitars in functional condition
now is the time to lend a hand -- er , nut.

| That’s what I use. Please note there are 3 different hole sizes. Depending on your tuner shaft. Some shafts have wings. |

Not certain about those bottom nubs - will look into them though.

This is a nut from a Rickenbacker 100. 2 1/4 x 7/16 x 1/2. Should I send this to Mark or to Mr Pilburn for duplication ? The two pugs are place holders, a little contact cement may be all that’s needed? |

I'm sending mine off to George. If we can confirm that they are all the same part, he'll be able to outfit a bunch of Rics. We'll need to be more certain about measurements because my numbers differ a bit from yours but we may not be on the same pager re: exactly what we are measuring. |

I requested both nut parts for comparison reasons.
When developing the Bridges we left the top center Non Grooved.
These nuts have grooves cut , so I want to compare them, for spacing and depth.
Let me do the measuring -- no offense intended - Most folks divide an inch by 32 - 64 I divide an inch by 1000.
We use CAD and machinery that can divide down 10,000 in an inch.
Once I have a better Clue, I will open more discussions as to wether or not to include Grooves.
For certain I only want to make a 1 size fits all type part. --- If Possible.

Yeah -- only reason I'm talking dimensions is for comparison because I'm wondering if there's any chance that one part fits all. But my digital caliper was reading some different specs from Robert's numbers.

Thanks JON and everyone else.
In 3D printing we have at our access, a Dual extruder one which uses a material that dissolves in water.
If all goes as I plan, we build a bottom out of the PTA (Dissolvable) with holes counter sunk for those Nubs.
We then print the Tough PLA on top of that little platform so to speak.
Then the part will have a flat bottom with nubs after we dissolve the PTA.
So far as the Grooves , I will see what gives upon inspection.
In my experience Ricky Grooves are all over the place in terms of spacing and depths. Especially on those all aluminum styles.
With the various Ricky's I've help get going again, all played much better and the people all swear they sound much better too.
The Best Part Is; Bakeolight is infused with asbestos , total carcinogen, with a half life of undetermined length, if it can breakdown at all.
PLA is actually BioDegradable, if it lands in a landfill it will eventually disintegrate and return to Dust.

Hello from George Boards
We received the nut sample from Mr. Light and have some preliminary CAD drawings. I expect the other sample on Monday, thanks to Mr. Murphy.
This post is to gain opinions, if We should make 2 versions.
1) The original spacing .340 (basically 11/32) this is the spacing we offer on our other 3D nuts for C6-A6 type tunings.
2) A Second spacing .375 aka 3/8" a modern spacing favored by Open E-D-G type tuning set ups.
Here a couple of images from the CAD to give a quick visual.

Thanks to Mrs.Boards (PJ The Brain) we have managed to get a substitute 3D printed , out of our now favorite material "Tough" PLA Gloss Black.
This material is rugged, you can sand it , file it , Buffer Wheel Polish it.
It looks like we can provide a Nut and Bridge Set that fits the various Ricky models, 100 - Silver Hawaiian and other with those shaped parts.
Hopefully this helps Ricky Folks keep their old laps alive for some more decades.
Side Note , I already have the Bridge that fits these same lap steel guitars.
Plus two variations on the Bridges that fit the Panda Type Set Ups.
