Does anyone use a mixer for practicing at night with headphones? And if so, how do you rig it up? Is it easy to setup, clean, plenty of headroom for the steel to sound natural and not tinny or dull what it sounds like in other alternative headphone amp setups? I’ve tried headphones directly into an amp and that wasn’t a great sound, also one of those little VOX plugin deals and It didn’t work either. If there’s a way to use a mixer and get a great sound I’d be all in for that.

I’ve been looking a little through the forum and haven’t found much information.

There’s a Yamaha MG06X 6 channel mixer for a good price, would that be a good idea?

Thanks in advance

There was a thread on this subject recently that ran a couple of pages, including some mixer recommendations:

Oh thank you Thomas!

that’s perfect, a lot of information there. I must’ve not typed in the right words in the search bar. It even talks about the same mixer I was looking at. Hmmm looks like there’s quite a few different options to consider.

I plug the output from my Revelation pre amp into one channel, PC into another channel and headphones into the headphone jack. You can EQ your sound, mix your sound and if you desire you can output the sound to a recorder (such as a Tascam DR-40) to hear what it all sounds like. I have made many nice recordings with this setup and BIAB

I didn’t answer in the other thread, but this is the mixer I use for practicing steel with headphones. I also use it for band practice and small gigs where I only need to run vocals. The Yamaha you mentioned should work just fine.

Hey Cody,
having small kids I also rely on silently practice at night. I've never had luck getting satisfying tone with a mixer alone. I put a tube preamp in line. Still not quite there. So I was looking for an IR loader ( impulse response loader = cab simulator) to get it to sound closer to the real thing. I found a brilliant little device I love to play through and it covers it all: the Cab M by Two Notes.

https://www.two-notes.com/torpedo-cab-m

Check the link, it has too many features to list, here are some of them
- a preamp based on a Silverface Bassman
- power amp simulations based on tube types : EL84, EL34, 6L6, KT88
- plenty of virtual cabinets
- nice reverb
- eq
- 1/4jack & XLR out
- 1/4jack through (so this is a DI-Box you can use on stage)
- aux in

I never liked the sound of simulation devices like the Line 6 pod, but this thing sounds fantastic with steel, guitar and bass.
Great tool for recording, too.

I use the PV 6 BT from Peavey. Plenty of hookup plus a Bluetooth connection for your computer so you could do online lessons or play alongside thru headphones.

Like Ron says above, welcome to 2020 , or maybe 2019 Think of these DV'S as a night time headphones/practice amp that also double as a GIG stage amp! Laughing

AUX In and PHONES OUT, what a concept ! Oh and Reverb !
Oh yeah the 50 watt head weighs 4 lbs and the 50 watt combo amp around 20 lbs !

I have a Roland AC30 and Boss Katana amp, both have aux in and headphones out.
The Katana in particular sounds great through headphones.

I also have been experimenting with Cakewalk Sonar by BandLab - a free download for
Joining BandLab. The Fender type amp simulator plugins are more than adequate, and oddly enough sound better with cab sims off - maybe because I’m running instruments into a Focusrite interface. Anyway, with midi files loaded into Cakewalk for backing tracks, it is a very simple setup with no footprint. No more mixer on my desk, no amp on the floor.

One option is to use a Line 6 Sonic Port with a phone or pad.

I use a Line6 Pod XT for headphone practice. Mixers work, but they sound dry and lifeless to me.

Also, don't forget that you can practice acoustically. It doesn't sound good, but it can really improve your technique to hear what the strings are actually doing.
