Mike Holland from a previous thread "Benny Rogers 'Sand' help !!" suggested maybe we could all do a version of Sand as fun thread.
So hears my version. B11th with a bit of double track in D9th.

Feel free to ad your version Smile

Nice one Jim, I particularly liked your overdubbing.

Here is a version I recorded from a couple of years ago.

This is from one of Dog Beaumiers excellent Lap Steel books!

Hope you all enjoy,

Thanks Mike, That was nice.
It was your suggestion on the other thread that inspired me to start this off. Very Happy

Here's a version I recorded in 2015. It's modeled after JB's early recording of the song, although I swing it a little more. The steel is mixed a bit louder than usual because this is an instructional recording (in my 16 Songs book). B11 tuning.

George De Fretes Played a D6th tuning, but for this one I think he's tuned A11th for the rich 9ths. B11th tuned down a full tone.

On the G de Fretes version...wow, that's kinda lovely that slow...one theory, with no backing evidence...it may be that the tape was slowed for effect, and that was originally in B11, played in C. The basic form with outro is pretty similar to the Jules ah See form. Cricket overdub was a bit heavy handed, but nice nonetheless. Smile But yeah, it sounds like either detuned B11 to A11, or perhaps just B11 with the tape slowed down as happened in some cases, on purpose or otherwise.

Sure you will, if you want to. I first heard the song 3 years ago, the same time I picked up the steel guitar...my first attempt recording it was about the same time and it was beyond rough (on a little shortscale Morrell), I should post it but none of your ears deserve that degree of maltreatment.

Here's a helpful resource that I hope Basil won't mind sharing, I think its been shared before:
http://www.waikiki-islanders.com/assets/SAND%20TAB%20ALL.pdf

That's the Jules Ah See version, I'm sure the Jerry Byrd version is about too...

You could well be right Nic. I did consider that, but I was assuming that A11 a better choice to tune from the de Fretes D6th (or D with added 6th) The top 2 strings already there and the rest tuned down rather than the top ones up.
Depends on his gauges I guess. - Just a maybe Smile
His D6th from Hi to Lo was : D-B-A-F#-D-B-A-F#.
What ever he done he sure was one of the greats'.

I love the intro to Sand but not so much the body of it so when I do finally get around to learning it, my plan is to do a personal arrangement that has the intro down at 2 or 3 different places and cut the rest short, in a way that's pleasing to the listener.

Here's a not very impressive version that I did 11 years ago when I was just getting my feet wet with lap steel (though I'd been playing pedal steel for years). It's the first song I learned on the B11 tuning. It borrows a bit from Jerry Byrd, and a little from Jules Ah See. I'd do it very differently if I were to record it again, now that I know both the instrument and the song better.

Jerry I remember watching this a few years back when I was thinking about getting into lap steel playing. I thought it was great then and I still do!

That same video also inspired me to play sand.

Here's a live version of our trio doing Sand at a recent celebration of life.
I was hesitant to post it, but what the heck...nobody's perfect!
I'm doing my "Benny Rogers" minimalist version here in C6.

Good to hear Sand played in different tunings'. Certainly doesn't have to be played in B11. C6th is a great tuning and if you drop the G half tone to F# you still have the lovely 9th cords.
Thanks for posting Steve.

Yep, my teacher teaches that as a (rootless) D9 tuning.

Great job everybody! I love hearing new takes on it (had never heard the Benny Rogers version until very recently). I saw some of my own earlier videos with my combo (duo I guess) on the song, and I noted how just in the last year, I play it slightly differently now. Definitely one of my favorites. I'd love to hear how Barney Isaacs or Billy Hew Len played it...
