Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum, so please forgive me if this is out of place. I'm in the market for a Pedal Steel guitar. Through my years of lurking here, I've decided that 3x4 is the way to go. I've been looking at used guitars on eBay and here, but it seems like the entry level guitars are harder to come by used. I reached out to Stage One, but they advised that I should reach out in November (patience is a virtue, but I never claimed to be virtuous). I am hoping to get some opinions on the GFI SM-10, the Mullen Discovery, or any other guitars in the $2,000 range. Thank you in advance for your input!

I've used the GFI s10 keyless for years now.zero issues. Moderate cabinet drop, easy to change things underneath, and they sound pretty good.I have owned 2 sho-buds,1 BMI. They were great also. These builders today are really on top of it.

You owe it to yourself to look up Justice guitars. http://www.justicesteelguitars.com/
I’m quite certain they can fix up with a new guitar that will suit your needs as well as your budget.

Joe, thank you so much for the reply! I think I may pull the trigger. Are you aware of a difference between your S10 and the student model? Thanks again!

Rick, thanks for the response! I can't say I remember seeing Justice guitars. It looks like the Jr. S10 3x4 is a great guitar to consider and within my price range. I'll have to continue my research!

I'm the same way and this is going to be one of your biggest challenges. Not just finding the pedal steel you want, but what is the wait time. I can tell you I firmly believe that a beginner should buy a new rather than used pedal steel. You don't want to inherit someone else's problem as learning pedal steel is hard enough for a new player with an instrument in perfect working order. Buying new though means you'll have to do some searching to find someone who has what you want in stock.

Usually Sam Ash music has the GFI S-10 SM in stock, though it appears they're out at the moment.

If you decide on the Mullen, I'd give Gary Sill of Sill Music Supply a call as he often has these in stock ready to ship...

I was in your position about 4 years ago and chose the Mullen Discovery. No regrets here. It sounds great and functions perfectly. It hardly ever goes out of tune and I've only broken one string in those 4 years. I may suck, but my guitar is dynamite.

As (past) owner of Stage one, Encore and a Mullen but not a Discovery, I agree with those recommendations. The GFI probably plays well but you should know it and Stage 1 are pull release changers:

Hi Ron, thanks for the reply! Your selection looks really awesome! Are the changers push/pull or all release? Talking specifically about the S10s you carry, not necessarily the Jr.

Not to throw too much of a curveball, but you may reach out to Mark Shuda perhaps and see if he's got anything lurking. We've never done business but he's in Wisconsin as well and seems to know how to find some solid used guitars...
