OMG; that Franklin(looks like all wood lacquered, even neck) sounds a LOT like a freakin Sho~bud.
Oh Wait!! Paul's Dad> Paul Franklin Sr...(please continue to get well Dad) is the one all through the 70's corrected ALL of Sho~bud's mistakes and built most all Custom orders for Sho~bud and etc...(I can go on and on); so YES...he knows how to build a pedal steel that can ACTUALLY sound like that old school Pedal Steel Guitar era.
AWESOME Paul...and you looked and played with excitement...you were diggin it man.

Thanks Roy....Every one of these Pro’s are “on itâ€! It’s a pleasure to watch/hear them in the studio. Great to hear Master Paul leading the way! How much fun can you have “at workâ€!? Carl |

Simply awesome. Please correct me if I'm wrong but is that Brent Masson playing the Keyboard? I may be mistaken but it sure looks like him. Great playing too! _________________ Mullen Royal Precision D10 Red Lacquer Pearl inlay 8&8

I thought so too Robert, except at the very end when he looks up, not sure if it's him. |

...Those pickups were old Sho Bud casings that were never wired. My father had them from the 70's so I had Russ Pahl wind coil on them...These pickups are exactly as Sho-Bud made them.
A big tonal contributing factor is Amaranth wood fronts, necks, and back plus a Birdseye maple top...That is also the same guitar used on my Christmas CD which interestingly sounds different.

Paul, I have listened to that Christmas album a dozen times,
trying to figure out where that tone came from! I finally assumed that it was just the studio. Now I know!
Can you post the copedent for that guitar? It seems to have
a lot of different raises and lowers in the brief look at the end plate. Thanks to All for posting. _________________ Just north of the Weird place, south of Georgetown |

Thank you so much Paul for clarifying about single coils on your guitar. I must say that tune you played on is so adictive to listen to. So much so that i sat behind my steel and try to learn your part...well as much as i could.
Also a quick question Paul; as you move your bar down the fretboard, it looks like you are lifting it a bit for every phrase...was this you having fun or it was itentional ? I am sorry if I asked a silly question...
Thank You : ) |

Hi Tomi,
Its not a dumb question at all...I never lift the bar unless I am doing hammer ons and offs..What you see is as I slide I never keep the same downward pressure as I have at the frets I land on. At those frets I can use so many variances for my emotional input...How to pull tone out of the guitar is a bar control lesson in my course. Everyone tends to look for "One size fits all" for how the instrument is played...The bar is the heart and soul of the musician and I believe it is the most overlooked element...Once players get a clean note without rattling they assume they have it down.
These songs were improvised. We were all given a chord chart - that's it! I had no idea what melody I would play. I was asked to think Buck Owens verse meets the Munsters bridge...This was a fun project...Nobody came in rehearsed and we had an hour to get the video shots together and then we let her rip...We had so much fun there is talk of doing a CD project with this concept.
Hi Roy,
Its the same setup...

That was terrific, Paul! Nothing like changing the usual context to spark creativity. Your point about bar control is profound. When you look at the Indian virtuoso players - like Debashish Bhattacharya - you can see how hard they've worked to be able to express such a wide range of nuance with the bar.
Stopping the instrument from making sounds in a very musical way is another aspect that I think is generally under-explained. Part of the reason Joaquin's lines had that beautiful, singing flow was the subtle brilliance of his pick blocking.
Lastly, I'd certainly buy that concept CD! _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |
