He was much more well known for slack key and singing, but this live recording of Gabby Pahinui playing steel, probably in B11, is pretty wild. If I recall from my kumu who gave me the recording, this was Don Ho's band and he was probably just persuaded up on stage (perhaps after a few drinks!). His playing is uninhibited, that's for sure! Whoa!

What Mike said!

Aside from the obvious Chicken Skin recordings, what else is available that features Gabby's sublime steel playing?

Here's a list of the 23 I've kept. No doubt there are others that I passed over.

I'm not positive he's on steel on all of these, but it's my best info as of now.

Advise if any of these attributions are incorrect.

Add Sam Kahalewai "Mama E" to this list. Gabby on both steel and vocal.

On the Sunday Manoa, album "Cracked Seed" Gabby plays steel on the song "Pa'au'au Waltz". There is a cool photo of him on the album itself.

On the Waikiki Records label, album "East Is East And West Is West And The Twain Shall Meet In Hawai'i" Gabby plays steel on a cut called "Paradise Isle".

He is also credited with playing steel guitar on the Gabby Pahinui Hawaiian Band albums. Vol 1 and 2.

Billy Hew Len once said that Gabby was his favorite steel guitar player. Good enough for me. I had all his albums in the '70s but couldn't sing a lick back then or I might have pursued it (slack key) more through the years. I have all the Hawaiian lyrics down from way back before you could print them from the net like now.

Wow. If I hadn’t known,
I would have thought this was Herb Remington. Some seriously
deep playing here.
