| I have a customer that plays Guitar now and has gotten a steel from us, but would like to play a lot of open guitar type stuff (not country). I've talked to one of my customers that had a basic E9th but with another lower E? He can't quite remember. Any advise for this guy as to a tuning? |

Mike, I've found reworking the bottom of E9 to include low E has many advantages.
This is the bass side of things on my guitar:
6 G# (raises to A w/pedal B)
7 F#
8 E (F/Eb LKL/LKR)
9 B ( C# w/ A pedal, D w RKL)
10 E (raises to F# on C pedal)
AB pedals up or down works nicely over low E.
Es lowered gives a low root Maj7.
C pedal works well with B7 type chords as well as a great "L.A. five chord" E over F#.
B&C pedals provide a low voiced min7.
And all variations thereof.
Pretty straightforward.
I think it would be cool to have 10 drop to C# while 7 drops to F, but haven't got that set up.
This would enable the option of low root minors, Dom7, Dom9 and of course ye olde Dom7(#9).
I use a ,056 on string 10.

This is something I've asked, and as an amateur guitar player for 35 years (but still want to learn standard E9) would love to do sometime.
An 11 string, which may exist but hard to find, or:
A 12 string single neck tuned to E9 with a low E (and one string left off)). |

12 string extended E9 (as opposed to a "Universal") already has a low E.
What string would you leave off?

Well that shows how much I know about 12 string tuning! Looking at it now, I would miss the D 9th string.
I need to go a few years before I try a new tuning, but an extra E down low would be allright. |

This Ext E9 has got the low E on 10...drops to C# with F lever..B on 9 drops to A with A pedal...I’ve taught this to several guitar players turned steel guys..

Larry,thats a cool set up. I saw your copedant posted in an older thread on a similar topic a while back.
I understand the B to A lower on A pedal to work as a low root.
Interesting that in that the lower voicings you almost have a Day set up w/ low B-C# on C pedal.
But I'm intrigued by the function of your zero pedal. Just the 9th string raise? And what advantage do you find in having it also on the right knee? |

Hi Andrew, when we play rockin stuff, I play the old guitar EB to EC# To EB, etc..on that pedal...(String 10/9)...Works in any key...keeps me in the rhythm section!..  The RKRlets me use it running the bass line down from (in for example Em..B Pedal & LKR).bass line under chord, .E-Eb-D on RKL 8th string, then Db on RKR to -C1/2 stop) to -B.....sometimes it’s a melody note while my Right foot is busy..

Having 4&8 go down to Eb and D opens up a ton of harmonic possibility. |

Extended E9 is my favorite. I definitely value the option to hit that low E occasionally. I actually sold off my 10 string guitars I enjoy it so much. I have a 12 string GFI for sale and the copedant is listed in the ad:
