Well Keith I guess I don't qualify for Viet Nam, but how about Korea? I joined the U.S. Marines in 1954 straight out of high school, went through basic training at San Diego MCRD then combat treaining at Camp Pendleton. We studied maps all about North and South Korea and the 38th paralell. We were bullet proof, then...just like that... China came in for the North and an armistace was signed and the conflict was over. All us battle hardened Marines were sent to varous bases around the U.S to finish out our 2 and 3 year service. Luckly I was sent to San Francisco's Treasure Island. Great liberty town. That's been 66 yuears ago and that crap is still going on over there. I wish they'd have let us finished it. Gung Ho Keith and Semper Fi and thank you for your service. Don.

January 1959 Sent to Ft Monmouth as EW specialist. I was sent on a C123 to somewhere. Set up listening posts along west side south to Pleiku (small airstrip!!) The enemy didnt like me and we still called them "Charley". I was known as a "Spook". Recovered at Ft Ord. Yes, not worth talking about. So many hurting and as I pass by the white crosses, I wonder this "new world" was worth it.

Back in 1969 I was a school teacher. June 11, 1969 I was drafted into to the United States Marines to fight the Vietnam War. Still have horrible memories from that experience. I recently looked up how many were drafted into the Marines during the Vietnam War, and the number was a little over 42,000. That got me to thinking, are there any of that 42,000+ drafted Marines on this Forum? I know it is a crazy question, but I keep wondering.

I volunteered for the draft with the Marine Corps in Mar. 1969. After ITR I was assigned to the 9th MAB off the coast of Nam on a helicopter assault ship. We pulled out of Nam around Jan of 70 and went to Camp schwab Okinawa. Since I didnt have 6 months in country I was reassigned to F2/5 stationed at An Hoa to serve until I was medivac'd August of 70.

Yup, former Marine..'69-'70..VietNam 2nd Battalion 9th Marines TACP.....literally lived on CH-46's and 53's dodging ground fire and wishing I had a guitar with me. I'm just glad at that time they didn't have controllable rockets..just point and shoot. The pilots used to just roll a little and make fun of their shooting skills.
Ah, memories.
