I know that most players here are familiar with the Fender (cable operated) pedal steels models 400 and 800 (single neck 8 and 10 string) and the 1000 and 2000 models (double neck 8 and 10 string). Usually the earlier models of the 400 and 1000 were blonde color and by roughly 1964 (when the 800 and 2000 were introduced) they were in three color sunburst. What some may not be familiar with is the fact that (unlike their non-pedal models) Fender offered these guitars in custom colors by special order starting around 1964.
What I am wondering is if anyone here owns or has owned a Fender pedal steel that is a GENUINE custom color guitar?
I have only seen two of them, a model 400 and a model 2000 both were "Lake Placid Blue" and clearly original custom colors. The reason that I'm sure they were original is because they had the HUGE Fender decal in tact on the wooden pedal rack over the finish. I think it would be very hard to find that pedal rack decal on a re-finished guitar.
So, has anyone ever encountered a custom color Fender pedal steel in other than L.P.B.?
I did own the L.P.B. 400 for awhile as it is my favorite Fender custom color.
It would be pretty cool if they ever made one in Sherwood Forrest Green, Burgundy Mist Metallic, Candy Apple Red, or even Shoreline Gold Metallic |

Search of previous Forum thread-Skip Edwards posted a pic of model 800 (from the 1966 catalog) in original C.A.R.
I know there are some doubters, I'm sure the two L.P.B. Fenders were original custom color guitars.
(I have pics of the 400 somewhere-just no way to post them). |

Yup...here it is. The coolest 800 I've ever seen.
The text from the catalog says that they were "available in Sunburst or Custom finishes at no extra charge", although they seem to be as rare as original Gibson Modernes.
And, dig the black Deluxe 8 in the foreground.
btw...there's a LPB 1000 currently on eBay. |

Thanks Skip-That's the one
Notice the large Fender (stock) logo decal on the matching custom color wooden pedal rack.
I highly doubt that somebody could get one of those to put on a re-finish. A good indicator that the horn is a genuine custom color. |

While playing Wayne Link's Mid Canada Steel Convention in Winnipeg, Manitoba app. 15 years ago, George Gorzitza from Lethbridge, Alberta was there with his Fender 800 in a blue colour, which he had me play for a tune or two.
It was the first time I had seen a Fender pedal steel in a colour other than the ivory or sunburst.

Saw this on ebay. Ad claims to have original finish. That may be true. They're wrong about it being a 1954. No '54 Fender pedal steels that I know about.

How about Stringmasters too?
They made some black ones late in their production, I had a triple (Late 70's-early 80's), and Leon had his famous red one. I've heard stories about a surf green triple, any others out there? |

This isn't original, but I'd be interested to know if there actually were any finished in Surf Green. I don't even know if they offered that color in 1958, when this guitar was built, but I thought it would look pretty sharp against the silver frame.

Stringmasters were available with a white or black finish from approximately 1976 until they were discontinued around 1981.
There was a discussion a while back in Steel Without Pedals about custom Stringmaster colors. The consensus was (if I remember correctly) that there were only one or two ever made with a custom color - one for Leon McAuliffe. All other red, blue, etc. Stringmasters were refinished by an owner. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

These were quick pics taken the night I got it six years ago (had to stay up late that night getting it packed up to ship in the morning before I flew home.) The dings and weathering (e.g., metallic gold in the undercoat) attest to its originality, not to mention the Fender decal on the pedal bar. It lost a few parts between the mid-60s (I think this is 000081 or 00081) and early '06, but I've got 'er up to five pedals now (and there's an eBay-bought bridge cover somewhere.) _________________ "Gopher, Everett?" |

Here are a few Fender PSGs from my collection...
This vinyl S10 was originally maroon, but I refinished it.
This is a Fender/Sho-Bud Hybrid. For a while, Sho-Bud were building Fenders, with a combination of Sho-Bud and Fender parts. |

To be honest, I don't really know what the official name of the color is. But I'm assuming it's the Sherwood green. |
