Do the players who play Bb universal tuning (Reese, Junior Knight and David Wright come to mind) have the set up to be able play the "other tuning" as do the folks who play the E9th B6th uni tuning? In other words can they get the equivalent of the AB pedal mash? And what key would it be in the open string position?

As I understand it, they raise the D strings to Eb to simulate E9th. Look at Reece's Bb6th:

With RKL engaged, pedals 1 and 2 act like the A and B pedals of an E9th.

That's cool. It really is the E9th B6th universal tuning in reverse. Very tempting. My good friend Don McClellan has something like this only in B.

My S-14 is destined for this tuning.
Very cool, I played David's steel and that was all it took for me.
Now if I can find the time to mess with the Sierra...

Billy,
The first two pedals on the Bb Uni. are the same as on E9th. On mine and Davids guitar we have the three pedals...ABC...just like E9th. Its really cool!!! Thanks, Junior.

Bb is where it's at!

the open tuning is Bb6th..no pedals...Eb9th
with the right knee lever left engaged.

Junior, Why do you prefer the Bb universal? Is there an advantage over the E9/B6?

Mike if your more into a C6 kind of thing,
it lets you do it like the back neck,
And add the E9 when you want.

The standard uni is E9'th
and you can add C6 like things to it.

It is the same same,
but sort of a mirror image kind of thing.
I dig it as a C6 1st kind of cat.

Mike,
On the Bb tuning, one neck...one set of strings...lighter guitar...most of all...I just like the way it sounds...I wish I had never went back to a D-10, but...!

I really enjoyed noodling on Reece's axe last year! I could really see some of the great wisdom behind it, especially as a 6th type player....but...

Would you guys care to explain where the "F" lever went on the 9th side?

I think it's RKR on Reece's guitar.

b0b, Am I going blind or does it say +1/4 on the Reese chart for RKR?

Billy-That 1/4 is a compensator. Reece used a couple for more accurate tuning.

As some has mentioned , if you are into C6 , jazz etc, you go the route of B6 or Bb6 or A6, as Reece's and Jr.'s. Push a knee lever and you are in the Country E9 Modes whenever you wish.

If you are into E9 more, than you do just the opposite. It is E9 Open and push a lever and it is B6 open or whatever tuning you are using, usually Bb6 or A6.
You can even do it with C6 if you are used to that.

Reece showed me how to do it his way many years ago and I like it as it suits me personally.
But if you are playing regular country gigs, you would probably stick to the E9 side...al
