was looking this over and thinking it's something like I've thought about for a long time but with a 12u instead of 10 like Travis'.
with a universal, i'd have all the tuning range i'm used to plus the benefits of the added 6.
Probably too late, too heavy and too expensive at this stage of my life. Nice to think about though.
Anybody else playing the 10 + 6 besides Travis? |

This may sound like an obvious question, but isn't the whole idea - indeed the definition - of a universal tuning to have everything you need on one neck?

Um - yes and no. Yes, it gives the standard E9/B6, but no on a 6-string resonator setup, which would be a very nice thing to have on a live gig for many of us.

I think a U12+6 would be great. I have an SD-10 MSA Legend, it is really an excellent guitar. The machining is at another level. |

yes, well as Dave points out, some of us look for a different timbre, tuning, feel etc. with a 6 string more akin to a lap or slide or in this case those plus an elaborate reso tone.
This would eliminate the need for me to tote a separate reso and lap steel for events where a specific musical style isn't called for. Many of us are expected to play a wide variety of music for most generic gatherings.
Not saying you can't approximate some of these things on a common ps tuning if you are proficient, but the feel and sound is not the same.
I referenced the MSA because of the extensive Fishman applications, but I guess a few builders might be willing to build such an instrument sans electronics.
The MSA 10 + 6 rings up at about $8K, so that would probably put a 12U model around $10K and of course out of my means, but I guess it's OK to dream.
I've thought of a custom build with the 6 on the front side or a convertible 6 on the rear that flips upside down when not in use.
I think the GFI AERO would be a good candidate for this. Small, lightweight short scale keyless job. I know they only show a S10, but I know of at least one D10 that was done.
Of course any of these would have to be custom built which puts such possibilities out of my reach, but it's food for thought.
I might even be able to convert a particular D or SD10 for such use. |
