I am almost never happy with the stock speakers in an amp. I bought a Tone Master and just knew when I bought it, the Jensen neo's would not work with my Zum steel. I dis- connected them and ran a speaker wire to the JBL D-130 in my Evans SE-200. I couldn't hear a dimes worth of difference. I then hooked it up to my TT-12 in a Rick Johnson pine, open backed cabinet. I liked the Jensen's better. To get rid of some weight, I had been meaning to swap out the JBL in my Evans with an EPS 15-C. It sounded so close to my JBL, I left it in. I then hooked the Tone Master to the EPS-15. As with the JBL, I couldn't tell a dimes worth of difference between it and the stock Jensen's.
This is all based on my ears and is subjective. I've only had my Tone Master a few weeks and have only played it at home at low volume. My opinion is that Fender got it right with the selection of the Jensen speakers. Buying this amp has been one of the the best things I have done. I'm leaving it as is and 33 lb. |

George--what would you think about a Tone-Master Twin with a neo 15? Maybe voiced like the Custom VibrAsonic of the '90s? |

Dave, that was exactly where I was going by trying the 15 inch JBL and the neo 15" 15-C. I just threw in the TT-12 comparison because it was convenient and I wanted to see how the Jensen 12's would compare to another high quality neo 12. I was pleased and disappointed at the same time when I didnt hear enough of an improvement over the stock speakers to make it worth while to build a new baffle board and install a 15. |

Interesting review George. Sometimes the stuff is as good as it gets. I have a Tonemaster Twin and havet yet to find the sweet spot. It's decent but not better than my current Peavey other than weight. I am surprised they didn't put an effects loop in there at this price. Have to go into the front like my old Twins. |

Myself....i love Jensen's especially the older ones. Especially the old Alnico. They do sound sweet..... However you said "At Home". Those are the key words here. I have always, and still do to this day, if you're playing clean ie:steel guitar, find that Jensen's don't like even heightened stage volume levels. That's exactly why most (not all) but most large rock amps companies don't use them, even though you'd think they would, for that very reason. Of course , rockers need speakers that breakup harmonicly, not through speaker failure i 'suppose.
Now....that's just MY OPINION.
As to the "Effects Loop" thing. One of my Pet Peeves. I'm lost without them. Unfortunately ..... i have again found in "my own personal opinon". I've found when guys cram 4 or 5 effect pedals, a volume pedal, wah pedal, dobro effect, tuner, syth, on & on & on. (Or even just that lone Electro Harmonix C9 organ effect pedal, you just had to have. Simply because "That" famous steel player you took online lessons from, who backedup all those legendary country singers,) Of course (love all you dudes & dudettes) did a neat solo thing on stage at the steel show with it. But sadly later you sold on the forum for about half what you had in it, because, "it wouldn't work on E9th"...... Forced Fed Straight down the 1/4" throat input in the front end of your Fender Deluxe Tonemaster input jack. You are just begging for unwanted noise, feedback, harmonic havoc. So i agree about the need for one. Time Based effects like the Hilton Legend, sound so so sweet in a nice loop like Brad Sarno puts on his Revelation preamp.
That being said..... There are several amplifier companies today that do not and absolutly will not include effect loops on their amplifiers. Although i've yet to hear a reason i can buy into. Such companies as Milkman Sound, Morgan, Allen, Fender, Two Rock just to name a couple. Why not? Again MY OPINION.... but i think it's a "Nostalgic Thing". They want to reproduce a well made fender type & style amp, and build it well. And the early amps had no loops. They will improve the reverb, or power section, preamp components, but a loop? Heaven forbid. Just a thought. |

I like an effects loop like most people. I am not sure they are as important today as they were in the past. The problem of noise in stomp boxes being amplified I don't think is as much of an issue with today's high quality digital pedals. I run a Wet Reverb, a DD-3, and a Black Box. I have run them direct through the guitar input and through the effects loop. I don't hear any noise either way.
FWIW: My settings on my Tone Master are Treble 4-1/2, middle 8; bass 7.
I like the Tone Master a lot. It will be used as my practice and backup amp. I like the sound better with my pot pedal vs. my active pedal. My active pedal sounds good, but different. The pot has more sparkle, for lack of a better term. My Evans will be my gigging amp, although it is 10 lb. heavier. |

Those effects are "Time Based" effects who get along well, and can be used either way. However, your Black Box, should always...be placed right after your pickup. Your pickup "Must See" the Steel Guitar Black Box in order to work as it was designed, and give you the best tone your new Fender can make.

In 2019, about 1.35 million guitar effects pedals were sold in the U.S. Alone. |
With so many different types, voltages, analog mixed with digital, bucket brigade etc.
Correct Clean Voltage, Effect Order, Effect Location. More important today then ever.
When you get that new Fender Tone Master set up the way you like it, lets have a sound sample.
Best of luck, & Happy speaker searching. |

George, Black Box is first, DD-3 2nd, and Wet Reverb last.
Concerning speaker searching, I've had Telonics, TT-12, BW 1502, D-130, EPS 15-C, and a couple more people have liked on the forum. I'm going to spend more time picking and less time messing with speakers for a while.
I just got in a cable yesterday that will connect my amp to my phone so if it works out I will see if I can post a sound clip.
Thank you for taking part in this discussion and sharing your opinions and technical knowledge. |

i bought a pair of weber neo mags to put in my tonemaster, but in the end i was surprised that for me the best sound was one neo mag and one of the orginal jensen neos. they're nice speakers. |

I tried mine with a JBL 15” K 130 from my twin. At first, my ears were familiar with it because It’s what I gigged with in my twin, but it didn’t sound better.
I Compared the two back and forth, and chose the stock speakers. They sound really good with the tone master.
I may fool around a bit with the pile of other 15”s I have, but It really sounds so good that I’m less inclined to mess with it. The stock speakers work really well for this amp.
I like to fiddle with my gear, and will try my Altec and Neo 15” eventually. I expect them to sound different, but for now, I’m enjoying playing this thing as is. It sounds really good. |
