Topic: A solved riddle to share with you |

My Rukavina Open D lapsteel started tuning crazy. Strings 3 and 4 would be off on my strobe tuner and as I'd try to tune them they'd suddenly be way off like D became B or F# became A. The readings were all over the place as I tightened and loosened the tuners. It couldn't be the strings as two strings going bad on the same day is just not very likely. So what was it? Yes it's kind of a trick question but if I give too much info the answer will be too obvious to smart guys. Dummies like me stumbled on the answer by accident. What was it????
I doubt this will ever be an issue for anyone else so I post this just for fun. |

Was the tuner off or low on battery power?

Two offhand guesses:
1) String path is accidentally fouling on adjacent string's post (sort of unlikely because this guitar's peghead gives each string a straight shot down to the nut).
2) Tuner's backside mounting screw and topside nut are loose and entire tuner is rotating within its peghead hole. |

You had strings 3 and 4 switched on the tuners? Don't ask me why I suggested this....

Actually that's not so far off but the craziness happened either way I turned the tuner.
Maybe this is too wacky so I'll give you another hint. It happened right after I took my guitar out of it's padded case. |

| OK. Apparently if you lay the steel on a flat surface, the guitar will rest on the top two tuners, cranking them maybe a third of a turn by the weight of the guitar alone. I'm struggling with the idea that a "mere" 1/3 of a turn would detune the guitar as much as three half-steps, though. |

BINGO! Yeah, I've had these Sperzal Trim-Lok tuners on there for a pretty long time but for some reason, the top two rubbing against the case when I pulled out the guitar loosened a bit and the strings were just slipping and sliding though the tension 'felt' fine. I only discovered it after giving up and blaming the strings. When I went to change them I felt the play in the locking mechanism. Tightened them up and all was right with the world-at least for a little while.
Doubt anyone else would take as long as I did to figure out the problem!!!

That was fun Jan........do you have any other puzzles you would like help on? Car, house, etc.??? I have a puzzle myself I solved, and I may post it a little later? I did figure it out but like you, it took a little time. Probably old hat to the guys on here with lots of experience, but I learned something from it, so all is good.

Don't get me started on Plumbing in my house. I had a slow draining bathtub that I spent a zillion dollars on chemicals to clean it out to no avail. No help from an auger down it either.Not a topic for this forum but the solution proved to be a real surprise.
Maybe there's another section where posts like this could go.Would like to hear guesses on that one! |
