When I was first getting started on the instrument, the three major manufacturers with a presence in my area were Sho-Bud, MSA, and Emmons. All marketed a student-model instrument -- the Maverick, Sidekick/Red Baron, and GS respectively.
My question is who was first out of the gate, who came next, and who was late to the party? ZB, and perhaps others likely were in the picture too, but I don't recall ever seeing one in the Twin Cities back in the day.
Any of you pedal steel historians out there who know the answers? Thanks in advance for sharing. |

I don't know, but in that era ZB also had a student model. It sounded great. _________________ ----------------------------------

I think "Lil' Buddy" was the next successful student model after the "Maverick" |

I'll probably get a nasty response, but I seem to remember the Emmons GS-10 coming out in the late '60s? And as I recall, both the Maverick and the MSA "Mini-Pro (their first student model) were first seen around 1971, which was before the MSA Red Baron and Sidekick came out. I can't say about the ZB student models, since there were so few in my area. |

I'm sure someone knows. I am thinking somewhere around 72 or so I was working part time for a friend who opened a small used instrument music store in Norwalk Ct. We somehow had a catalog for Miller Steels. I tried to order a student Steel from them but they kept telling me to call back as they had no wood. No wood ???? So after a month or two I called Sam Ash in White Plains NY and they told me they had a Maverick on the floor. I think $350. Off I went to White Plans NY !
side-note:
That small Music Store in Norwalk Ct was the first storefront for DADDYS JUNKY MUSIC STORE. Fred Bramante owner. I believe he moved to Stamford Ct then somewhere up in New Hampshire. I had read that Fred became very politically active and the stores (10 or 12 of them ) all closed maybe 10 years ago .
The name came from Freds youngest daughter who called all the used Instruments JUNK ! _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,
