What does BCT actually physically do?
If the changer is bolter to the guitar
and you press a pedal, this does not disconnect the string from the body. |

Once again, from the Carter Web site:
Bud Carter and World Class Steels, Inc. dba Carter Steel Guitars have received the Patent for Body-Contactâ„¢ Technology, a highly revolutionary breakthrough in pedal steel guitar design.
BCT allows the Carter to be the only all-pull steel guitar whose changer fingers make direct contact with the wood in the steel guitar body.
BCT changes the way the string energy is transferred throughout the steel guitar. BCT is a Unique Sound Transfer Technology that allows the pedal steel guitar to create a better tone and a more consistent sound. The overall spectrum of the sound is consistently equal: a highly sought-after characteristic by builders and players everywhere.
BCT has been built into Carters since late-July 1998. So, as of August 2001, over 600 Carter owners have had a chance to field test this new technology. They consistently remark on "how much improvement there is in the tone, sustain, action, and feel of these Carters over the older models".
In keeping with its consistent commitment to downward compatibility of improvements for all Carter customers, Carter Steel Guitars is happy to announce its BCT UpGrade Program for older Carters. If you have an older Carter, you may contact Ann Fabian via email or phone (800-969-7332) with your Serial Number to find out if your Carter already has BCT or to schedule it for a BCT UpGrade. Carters built prior to BCT can be UpGraded with this new BCT Technology**.

Not to change the subject.
Body Contact Technology.
Changer fingers make direct contact with wood in the steel guitar body.
My question is when the fingers make contact with the wood, will the wood not ware and the fingers will have to travel more and more as time goes on? |

The wood does not wear away because the raise fingers do not saw or rub the wood. They simply pull away and then come back to rest against the wood.

I'd like to pitch in here again with my own experience with BCT.
I had a pre- BCT Carter, that I was quite happy with. Good tone and sustain.
I was honestly sceptical of the push from the Carter Folks to upgrade, as I couldn't see what the advantage would be.
Eventually I got another Carter, that was built with BCT, and could hear a positive difference, especially in sustain above the 12th fret.
So I left my older one off for the BCT upgrade, and man, what a difference. Much better tone and sustain, particularly up high, and hardest to explain or understand, better response- it seemed notes just "came out quicker".
In fact, the retrofitted guitar sounded better than the factory BCT one.
So my experience would be that BCT is a real, noticeable improvement, and definitely worth having on a Carter guitar.

I am not knocking BCT. I just dont understand how the fingers touching the body can be any closer than the whole changer system being bolted to the body. |

Well, I guess that answers my question. I was just curious. I thought the contact went the other way somehow. I've tried to look down in the Carter changers and never could figure out what the body contact was. I'll know what to look for now. Thanks John. |
