I recorded some Hawaiian songs a few weeks back and this is one of them. "South Sea Island Magic" played on my Fender T-8

Great playing and lovely Stringmaster tone! What tuning(s) did you use?

Jim, it is nice to hear that Hawaiian touch in your playing South Sea Island Magic, particularly in your single string picking.

This is very well played and a nice piece of music. Got some questions about the song:
Is this an old piece (and if it is ...),
Would you know if there is a vocal version?
can you point me to some benchmark recordings?

Hi Paul.
"South Sea Island Magic" I believe is a song written by Andy Iona around 1936. The lyrics by Lysle Tomerlin. It was performed by Alfred Apaka, Bing Crosby and of course many others.

Here's a version probably by Jules Ah See for the "Hawaii Calls: Hawaiian Strings" album...an album that got me addicted to Hawaiian style playing long ago and haunts me to this day.

"South Sea Island Magic" is the first tune on the album.
