Hi all, I was a somewhat active member here several years ago, and after a long absence for various reasons (life/work/divorce/stuff) I am back to seriously working on my steel playing.
In the interim I have been playing and studying various instruments, a big jazz guitar phase which really helped my understanding of harmony/chord construction, a brief stint on pedal steel, a semester on theorbo/bass lute (I will never complain about keeping a steel in tune again!), and classical mandolin.
I am a complete jack of all trades, master of none! After recent soul searching, and the absence of gigs, I realised that the instrument that is the most fun, rewarding and challenging is the straight steel.
So I am packing everything else in it's case, have ordered the Jerry Byrd course from Scotty's and lined up a guitar playing friend to work on American Songbook tunes, so when gigs start happening again we have a new challenge to work on.
Sorry for the long post, just wanted to say hi and get reacquainted, I have been checking in here a lot and feel like I know many of you already. Mike Neer, your studies have been especially interesting/inspiring to me!
I also printed out Threadzilla years ago, and refer to it often for new ideas. The next challenge is working on sight reading for steel. I think it comes up in the Jerry Byrd course too.
Ok, enough from me, thanks everyone. _________________ If it’s on the ground it can’t fall down. |

Welcome back, Dean! I wish you much musical happiness with the steel.
I was intrigued by your statement that you had ordered the Jerry Byrd course from Scotty's. Are they still shipping product? I thought all operations had ceased, no? _________________ www.JimCohen.com

Hi Jim, thanks for the welcome. Scotty's is definitely open for mail order business. I sent an email and was answered very quickly. _________________ If it’s on the ground it can’t fall down. |

Hi Dean & welcome back from another Aussie.
I can relate..years away at times, and with a finger fracture not healing, I'm not fretting anything these days.. so enjoying only playing the lap slide guitars.
All the best to you.

Hey Joel and David! Nice to meet you here. Joel, those finger injuries are terrible..... I dislocated my left hand ring finger a couple of years ago. Luckily physio got me playing again. Hopefully yours will heal in time.
David, Cairns sounds great except for the midgies, box jelly fish and salties! _________________ If it’s on the ground it can’t fall down. |

I know you guys speak English?????????, but crikey! Midgies, box jelly fish????? I do know what a saltie is. I'm surprised you didn't tell us you dislocated your finger on your kack hand.
I have a Mate in Vic. and a while back his sent me a book of Aussie slang words......so I guess I have to go find it now!
Anyway glad to have you back on the forum. _________________ Currently own, 6 Groner-tone lap steels, one 1953 Alamo Lap steel, Roland Cube, Fender Champion 40 |

Welcome back, Mate. Some Vegemite will fix you up in no time. (All the Aussie I know.)
The American Songbook sounds like a good way to go. _________________ Those that say don't know; those that know don't say.--Buddy Emmons |

Dean,I had my ring finger badly injured in a sailing accident. It slowly got better, and now it forecasts the weather. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

Welcome Back!
I was considering finally getting the Byrd material as well, but I wondered if they were still open. Hopefully you get a response and your course soon! |

Hi Danny, yes the course is on the way. I got a quick reply from Michael (I think he may be Scotty's son?). Anyway, great communication and service, it's a matter of waiting now, I guess delivery will take a little longer than notmal. _________________ If it’s on the ground it can’t fall down. |
