Great post Andy. Is the any CD remakes of the solo album that Jerry talked about of David Kelii? _________________ Canopus d-8

I don't think so. Years ago, Basil Henriques linked to a download but haven't been able to find it. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

There's a couple used copies on discogs...condition unknown of course...

David Kelii is someone, as a relative newcomer to the steel, that I've heard a lot -about- but not so much -of-. Most of the Hawaii Calls I have heard was after he left (leaving Jules in the top spot there). But I've heard his praises sung rather a lot (not least from my kumu Alan Akaka).
Jeff Au Hoy said he was probably the steeler on this George Kainapau album:

That II V I vamp that he opens it with, on E Mama E, I've always heard that as a "Jules" cliche, but it seems Jules may have learned a few tricks from David! _________________ Waikīkī, at night when the shadows are falling

Keli'i is on some of the records you can hear on YouTube by Al "Kealoha" Perry & his Singing Surfriders. This was in his early career. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

Here's a list of a bunch of David's recordings---the ones I've kept.
Most of this is early 1950s on back.
As I recall, the 4 in the middle under his own name are from the Maple LP.
You should be able to find the "Akoni Lani" LP easily online.
You should be able to get a bunch of the Bell label stuff at:

Andy
Thanks for posting...interested in David Kelii history.
I read somewhere that he spent some time in Las Vegas.
This guitar must have been left behind in Las Vegas as it surfaced in a pawn shop there a few years back.
If anyone recalls seeing David in Las Vegas would love if they could share.
This guitar is a double 6

That's the same one in the old reverb listing I showed above...I wonder who got it...hopefully someone who appreciates the history! _________________ Waikīkī, at night when the shadows are falling

The color group pic below is from the Stardust hotel in Las Vegas.
I assume it's the Koa guitar that we hear on some of the 1940s Hawaii Calls broadcasts. Maybe the National as well.
