So you are a new player ? I learned how to play from The Winnie Winston / Bill Keith Pedal Steel book. Covers a lot of territory, including the first two strings.

Hi Mike Bowles,
Those two strings are a 9th and major 7th interval...The major scale has these intervals 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 and then an octave up it gives us 8 9 10 11 12 13. All of those intervals are needed for melodies and chords....Learn a little bit of music theory and learning becomes much easier to accomplish.

Pick string 3 then 2 then 4 then 5 That is the melody for "I'm not Lisa"

With A&B pedals engaged play string 6 then 5 then 2 then 4 for "Meet George Jetson"

With pedals down string 1 is a 6th --- String 2 is a b5

All you need to learn about theory is what I learned "Street Theory" which is the easiest way to access what is needed to play music at the highest levels. I believe students need this minimal theory mindset for the beginning of their journey. The point is to learn enough so you can answer your curiosities.
