Was thinking about Jim Boyd, brother of the better-known Bill Boyd yesterday, and had a search at the Internet Archive (archive.org). Imagine my amazement when I came across this huge collection of 78s and radio shows:

The link will start your download, it's a big one, over 1.5GB, but if you're interested in early Western swing, you sure won't be disappointed. Much more than that, the archive (divided into folders the size of a data CD) contains a lot of related radio shows including Dr. Brinkley's goat glands, Crazy Water Crystals, and even a bit of early Carter Family. It was compiled by vintage radio enthusiasts so has all sorts of background info on the history of border radio, "Pappy" O'Daniels, and on and on.

First decent pic I've seen of Kermit Whalin. Is that a Gibson EH-150?

Hmm, looks to me like one of those teardop-shaped Gibsons, like Little Roy Wiggins is playing here:
No idea what the model is called. Or is it a Kalamazoo branded one? Someone here knows for sure. Great pic though, thanks Mitch! There's a really muddy version of the same one in the archive, this is excellent. |

Yep, it’s a Recording King! I was tipped off by the recent post in “steel without pedals” about carousel knobs. Nice little guitars from the look of it. |
