I am new to pedal steel and need a little advice in setup. I have a Sho-Bud 6139 S-10 and my legs barely fit under the cabinet so with a volume pedal my right leg doesn't fit at all. I raised the legs up to get the clearance I need so now the pedals are too high. My question is, once I get the proper height set should I then measure and order longer rods for my pedals?
Also, I've read here on the forum that a persons thighs and arms would be parallel to the ground, as far as a playing position starting point, should that be my goal?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks much,
Karl

You might possibly "tilt" the guitar,,,back legs extended so that your legs will go under,,front legs stay the same so that the pedals are same height. I think the standard height for a pac a seat is 21"-22". If you were sitting on something taller or shorter that effect your legs going under guitar. I think the "parallel" to floor thing is a general preference,,not a hard fast rule.

You *might* be able to use pedal rod extenders like the Forum store and psgparts.com sell but I remember reading that SB pedal rods are different somehow, an extra bend or something. But if you ask b0b and Michael Yahl they'll tell you

Sonny's suggestion to tilt the PSG, should give you a good starting-point. From there you can see better what you want to do next – it may even work fine like that.

All you need is pedal rod extenders like b0b sells...

I have used them on ShoBud rods before.

I tried raising the back legs but I had to go about 3.5" to get enough clearance, reminded me of a '56 Chevy I had in the 70s that was all jacked up in the back. So anyway, it was too much of a tilt. It looks like the extensions may be the way to go. Thanks you guys for taking the time to help me out.

If you can barely get your legs under the steel, you are probably pretty tall and need to raise your steel. I'm tall (6'4" but shrinking as I get older), and I tried for quite a while to avoid this - it was stupid and pointless.

Here are some starter threads on the various aspects of this issue. I lifted my 6139 3" when I had it with no problems. I lift an S10 more than an SD10 or D10. Why suffer with a guitar that doesn't fit you?

This is an often-asked question. I have a bunch of steels, so I got my lift kit hardware in bulk from McMaster Carr, as those threads indicate. I think I put some links in there.

If you're going to raise front legs, take the clutches apart clean them realy well, make sure teh beveled sections in metal and plastic rings are together and if you want to make absolutely sure the cluthces won't slip you can cut some 1/2" PVC pipe and put them in the top section so the legs can't collapse

You can go to a welding or machine shop and have rods made very cheap. There are also threaded extender's at places like Lowes.
