I was passing some time searching 'Pedal Steel Guitars' on eBay UK this morning, when I saw a fine Shot Jackson one-off, apparently built to order for a Bill Mayville. It was a beautiful guitar, single neck, four pedals and four knees. There was an electronic tuner actually built in to the middle of the arm-rest, and most importantly, an engraved brass plaque at one end of the console. The engraving stated that the guitar had been built to order in (if I recall) 2006.
With a few hours to go, it's no longer listed. I assume a deal has been done off-site.
Curious to find out more, I searched Bill's name on the SGF, to discover that he'd passed away in 2013. There were many online comments testifying to what a good guy he was.
The reason for my post is three-fold:
1) How did this guitar end up on eBay UK?
2) I felt a sadness at first that this man's pride and joy was now just a pedal steel guitar for sale.
3) Then my spirit was lifted when I realised that the brass plaque would ensure his name would live on indefinitely...and the guitar would continue giving pleasure to future owners, thanks to BILL MAYVILLE. May he Rest In Peace. |

I didn't know Bill personally,,but had several communications with him while he was living in Texas,,,he was excited when he ordered that Jackson guitar. He sent me several CDs,,explaining and examples of C6 tuning,,,he was enthusiastic about that tuning,,,a very nice, helpful gentleman. |

If anyone is interested, the guitar has reappeared on eBay UK
I can never remember how to send links, so if you want to check it out, go to eBay UK and search pedal steel guitar...it's top of the page. Only 22 hours left btw. |

Tony,I noticed this guitar on Sunday and it seemed a bit spurious, the auction was to finish two days later. It was quickly removed only to reappear soon after with a different seller. This continued several times,in all I counted about six different sellers.I also checked the sellers other items...A gold Rolex watch a les Paul guitar,a Martin guitar and various other items.Definately a scam.
I corresponded with Bill Mayville many times and actually managed to meet Him at The Dallas show,He was an absolute gentleman and proved to be very helpful. I was saddened to hear of His passing. |

It may be of interest to know that Bill had this guitar up for sale when He lived in Las Vegas,He had hardly played the guitar and was asking $3000 His reason for sale was that He had acquired an Emmons D10 and also a Mullen. He moved to Texas after His Wife passed.
Perhaps a forum member owns the Jackson guitar. |

Thanks for the update, Billy. It was indeed a scam, I reported to eBay this morning in case they can trace the origin. Sad to see such a fine guitar being hijacked this way.
Doubly sad that in this time of world-wide crisis, there are those who will carry on their money-making schemes regardless.
Stay safe and stay healthy! |

A little story about Bill. He moved to Hawley, Tx near Abilene. I found out about him and went to see him a few times. He had lost his wife and was ailing himself. He could be a little moody. He gave me a teaching CD he had made. It was really pretty good and sounded great. I made the mistake of telling him I already knew most of the stuff on it. He got a little aggravated about that. I can get along with most anybody so the next time I went to Abilene I stopped at a barbecue place and got him some brisket and took it too him on my way home. I was immediately his buddy again. |

What a great story, a fitting end to this thread. They say that people pass away twice....once when they die, the second time when no-one speaks their name anymore. Hopefully we've spoken Bill's name enough to keep it alive for a while longer. |
