This is so cool. Terry Gross of NPR's Fresh Air, back when it was a local NPR affiliate show out of Philadelphia when Winnie was living there. Terry Gross's voice sounds like the voice of a young 20 something. Winnie's Steel Wool album had just been released and they discuss that among other stuff. Check it out! BTW, I was sent this link by Winnie's brother, Rick Winston who lives just down the road from me.

Yeah, great hearing the discussion of the Nashville Bar album when it was pretty new. Winnie used to spend a lot of time in Vermont, in particular just down the road from me where his parents had bought an old farmhouse back when. Winnie used to play out with a local woman country artist and had a lot of connection with Vermont and its artist community. There is much more in the Fresh Air archive Jack. Terry Gross is a crazy country music fan and there are interviews she did with Merle Haggard, George Jones, Johnny Cash, Rosanne Cash, Doc Watson... You can listen to them in her Country Music Icon archive folder at the link below:

Winston said he regarded his playing as outside of the Nashville tradition, but what he played (on the excerpts in this show) was very traditional country style. |
