I need a changer-end tuner for my Brumley-era ZB. I broke a 6-32 tap in one. Would someone sell me one or two? Bad idea to use a tap to clean up the threads?
Are they supposed to be that hard to turn? I know the unit has got to hold a tuning but it seems excessively tight. But what do I know?
Thanks for any help. _________________ Bruce Wandmayer

That’s a good question and I wouldn’t mind having a few spares myself for my old ZB.
They are close to what is called a barrel bolt, binding barrel, barrel nut however a quick search did not turn up any with a normal black oxide socket cap screw head.
There are stainless vented cap screws that could be tap drilled and then tapped to possibly make them in a pinch

But much easier, there is a resident ZB guru B. Greg Jones here on the forum, he might sell you couple, you could try him via PM. _________________ Scott Swartz

Scott,
I've never heard of a "vented" screw like that. Thanks!
The tuners should have a dimple like this one, to keep them from turning too easily. I use a chisel & hammer, while it's threaded onto a screw. Just a light tap.
I have cleaned the threads of a few using a 6-32 tap. But now I use an ultrasonic cleaner. _________________ "To live outside the law you must be honest." (Bob Dylan) |

I don't have a machine shop, just a drill press.
Use a 10-32 socket head cap screw. Cut to length.
A 6-32 tap is suppose to use a #36 drill bit.
(I used a #33 which is slightly larger & easier to tap)
Align the bit in the vise.
Put the screw in the chuck. Drill.
Depending on the screw hardness & quality of the tap, it may be hard taping. Take it slow & use oil.
Put dimple in it
