Anyone out there use a noise reduction pedal in your chain? Just curious.
Pros/cons appreciated along with which pedal you have/had.

I can't think why anyone would want a noise gate when they have their foot constantly on a volume pedal.

When guitarcenter was open by me I used to buy a lot of pedals, try them for 30 minutes and return them. The Boss ns2 was one, tho I would consider one if i was playing out with single coils or anything else prone to hum/hiss
But you should read threads here and at tdpri, les paul forum about all the things that cause hum/hiss, ground loops, big transformers or fluoro lights close to your pickups, your tele needs cavity shielded etc. If it's your house maybe an electrician could look at ti.

I don't use a noise gate for PSG, but definitely need one with my six string guitar rig. I used to use the Boss NS2 and it did the job, but I found the ISP mini deci-mate to work better and it takes up half the pedal board space.

I didn't mean to be sniffy about noise gates - I was thinking pedal steel.
I work with one or two guitarists who I really wish would use one!

I ask because sometimes one's signal chain can get a little long and the chain can develop a "hiss or hum". A noise reduction pedal tames the "hum and hiss" whereas a noise gate just slams the door shut and kills sustain.
That's why I asked in a nutshell. Not having issues at the moment but was curious what others did.

You could gang the NS-2 put one on the start of the chain and then one on the end. But the NS-2 gets a bad rap from people expecting any pedal to be transparent. Everything put in a chain will affect the sound. You can still compensate with EQ or gain for what gets lost. Like fishing you don't throw the line in the water and then leave the rod to do all the work while you take a nap.
Rocktron was a go-to "noise-gate" back in the 80's and was a rack mount unit. The Hush is not a noise-gate but a noise suppressor on top and bottom noise depending on where you play on the neck.
I would try the pedal and see if it works for you is the best approach. As with anything, suggestions are per situation not a panacea fix-all as everyone's situation and playing styles are different.

Hey Gene, The Boss pedal is a good one.
I worked at Guitar Center (Guitars Etc.) in Seattle in 81 to 83ish
for Dan Wallace. Learned lots!

I tried the ISP Decimator pedal.
Worked very well.
Ultimately, as Ian mentioned, the volume pedal can certainly function as a noise gate.
The reason I tried one was because of the number and types of stompboxes I was using - fuzz pedals especially can get noisy.
