Sorry to hear this. I've been a fan of theirs since the sixties when they hit with "Flowers on the Wall" written by then tenor singer/guitarist Lew Dewitt. He was later replaced by Jimmy Fortune who was a great singer/songwriter but I always liked Lew's high "lilting" harmonies. They never sounded the same with Jimmy. I always liked Harold "Roadhog's" bass vocals. He seemed to stray from pitch on occasion but it was a good job on his part.. I'm enjoying the reruns of their old TNN tv show on RFD-TV. I guess Harold was older than Don? I always wondered if the "Class of '57" was actually their graduation year as that was mine......JH in Va.

I have always been a fan of the Statlers and loved Harold's sense of humor. I had the complete recording of the Road Hog and have laughed until I had tears running down my cheeks.
RIP Harold you will be missed.

During the late fifties and early sixties many radio and television stations featured local talent on live shows. Some of the talent would have 15 to minute weekly shows.

This type of entertainment was dying by the time Roadhog Moran and his Cadillac Cowboys was released. It is important to note there are two Roadhog performances, a radio show performance and a live at the Johnny Mack Brown High School performance. My favorite memory centers around the radio show.

I was in the military and on leave after 2 1/2 years of duty outside the US. The first weekend I returned my father, younger brother and myself traveled from lower South Carolina to Columbus, Ohio to visit my older brother, Harold, and his family.

Much of the time in the car was spent scanning the dial as stations faded in and out. Somewhere deep in the mountains of Virginia we heard ... the Roadhog Moran and his Cadillac Cowboys radio show. Perfect. We had no clue what was going on.

We almost had to pull off the road we were laughing so hard. For anyone that has ever played on, or listened to, one of those Saturday morning shows, they nailed it.

This poster is for sale on the Statler Brothers website.

Nailed it indeed. I wonder if he had any idea how iconic this character would become .

I don't think they did when they did it. And I understand they had moments when they wished they had NEVER done it because it got so popular, fans would ask for Roadhog during Statler performances, and Harold would get kinda ticked.

Yes,

I also heard Harold got tired of the character.

I read one time one of the session musicians, Grady Martin perhaps (?), said the Cadillac Cowboy sessions were some of the hardiest sessions he was asked to do. After spending years learning how to sound good and tight it was jarring and difficult to play bad.

He went on to say the Statler Brothers were normally so vocally prepared and knew what they wanted a song to sound like that their sessions were considered easy and were normally productive sessions with little downtime between songs.

I was huge fan of the Cadillac Cowboys. I can remember high school nights in the cab of a John Deere plowing rice fields and hearing the skit come across the radio. I had never heard about George Jones' opinion until reading this story just now....too funny...!!

Joe,

Thanks for posting that link.

The great thing about a parody that is done right is everything is so spot on you don't realize at first what is going on. Once you do realize, it's kind of like the moment when you realize the jokes on you, but even better because the joke isn't on you, you're actually in on the joke.

Jim, like you (and George Jones) I didn't have a clue at the beginning...but the more you listened, the more they got you....hook, line, & sinker.

The links below are for the unfortunate who never got to hear this on AM Radio airwaves....where it REALLY sounded authentic....as well as for those of us that do remember...!! LOL...!!
