Anyone have neck pain while playing? Looking down is the problem without bending the neck forward too far. Seems to be related to posture but maybe something else? Just wondering if others have this problem too.

Couple of ideas.

Try raising the lap steel off of your lap... like on a table or on a stand.

Take frequent breaks to get up, stretch and move around. The moment you feel the slightest discomfort you should consider moving

I used to get it in the area between the neck and left shoulder blade. Playing with too much tension in the body I think. I eventually learned to play with a relaxed body posture -- no tension, no pain. It took a while to get there, though.

Moving as suggested above is good.
I destroyed my neck and back in Motorcycle accident.
My Neurosurgeon gave me the below exercises.

Neck isometric exercises with a towel.
Take a towel roll it, place on your forehead.
While holding the towel, push your head forward hold for a few seconds then repeat.
Do the same left and right.
Then move the towel to the back of your head then push into it and once again left and right.
Only a few seconds start with 3 seconds and maybe 3 reps.

Once your muscles are stronger your disks and vertebrae will stay put no more pain worked for me.
Just start slow and don't push to hard.
