In conjunction with the album subject of Nic Neufeld's topic, here is another album of the Hawaiian Village Serenaders. All 12 tracks are on youtube. It seems to be from 1963 on Decca. One good thing about both these albums is the tracks are not the obviously over-recorded Hapa Hoale standards. This one is recorded after Jules Ah See's untimely death. Does anyone know who the steel player was? Perhaps Barney Isaacs?

Given the time, and that treble heavy sound, I would guess Barney Isaacs. I could be wrong but I can't imagine another player, with those musicians, at that time, sounding like that... Now I wonder, hearing a few more of the songs like Kawohikukapulani, I wonder if there are two steelers. I'd swear Barney was one of them, but the other...Eddie Pang is a possibility, I suppose, and it doesn't really sound like Billy Hew Len. Interesting.. _________________ Waikīkī, at night when the shadows are falling

It's difficult to find reliable info (and I certainly could be way off) but I always figured it was Barney and Danny Stewart playing on this one. |

Love the album, and the other one which Nic mentioned. "Crushed Flowers in My Lei" is a favourite! I'd like to second a vote for Danny Stewart, who I also think is playing on this album with Barney. _________________ Commodore S-8
