hi folks , does anyone have suggestions for purchasing new strings for my vintage national grand console steel guitar,
for the C6th 8 string neck.[high tuning= G-high [1st] to A-low].
i purchased it years ago and have never changed the strings.
are 8 string sets available ,or is it customary to purchase a set for 10 string neck , and just not use the 1st and 10th string ? really appreciate info on mfgr.'s of quality sets .
i'd probably go with standard medium or heavy gauge .
thanks much !

If you are looking for "semi-flat" strings, juststrings.com also carries SIT "Scotty's" sets in 6 and 8 string tunings.

Unfortunately, the SITs have the G on the bottom and the E on top -- just FYI ...

I have yet to see an 8 string C6 set with a G on top. OP may have to buy a set with E on top and add the G, or buy a 10 string pedal steel set. If his guitar is short scale the first option may give the best results as the pedal steel gauges may be too loose.

thanks everyone !
"just strings" looks like they will have what i need .
they may be my new - go to - string company .
i have several other guitars and string instruments ,
so i have extra single strings on hand .
if i needed / wanted to swap out a string , that would be fine . just curious, anyone else play
the old vintage national grand console double neck 8-?
it is real comfortable to sit at ,and play.
the hardest part to find is the '50's national power cord ,
with phenolic screw on type end - to 1/4" jack .
luckily i have a couple .
this is a '56 , i haven't changed the strings or played it much since i got it a few years ago .
i'm putting a C6th set on the bottom neck ,
and E7th on the top neck . which i think is on now ,
but some of them seem to be mismatched / incorrect.

The string gages for E13 with a high G# are pretty close. That's what I've got on my Stringmaster right now for C13 with high G and low Bb.

On my National I have been using LaBella 8 string sets. They are a balanced set and sound beautiful. Have to hunt around for them though.

You don't see many players using E7 but I like that tuning (G# on top) for a sweet old country flavor or for blues. You can always tune the B string up to C# and you have E13.

I like flats on my 8's, Gimmesomestrings.com sells Thomastik Infeld singles and imo these are the best flats available.

yes , i agree , i have bought thomastic's for several of my
" regular " spanish neck guitars , they are excellent quality . also as tim mentioned , i thought that E7th tuning for the top neck , would be a nice contrast to the C6th .
