Pedal 9 used for E9 ?

Some time ago I heard of a major player that used an E9 pull on the far right side of the pedal board. I think it was a pedal 9 change. He moved his right foot from the volume control and used it to activate the pedal change.

Does anyone know this this was and better, which string and direction that change affected?
