First saw him in 1972 when he was touring with Steve Goodman. they played a club in Boulder for a week, and I went every night.
So sad to hear. |

I would like to caution that there is a tendency of late to politicize a celebrity death. I don't imagine John would've liked to be a part of something that can't as yet be proven. Ironic that his words of "blow up the TV" would come around and conflate an agenda seeking mileage to confuse reality.
Someday we may be able to sing:

| Sad news, indeed. His debut album was one of the first records I ever bought as a kid. And the one he did with Mac Wiseman a few years ago is one of the most heart-warming albums ever recorded. RIP! |

| I've always enjoyed John Prine's singing, songwriting and guitar playing. I'm always trying to finger pick like him. His voice changed with age and some health trouble, but for me, I thought he got better as he aged. I always got a kick out of his song "Dear Abby". Cool dude, atleast his legacy will be around for years to come. |

So sad. Back in the early 1970's, a good friend and I used to go down to the "Old Town" district of Chicago and try our hand at open mikes in the folk clubs (I used the stage name, "Jake Foxbreath"  ). Clubs like "Somebody Else's Troubles" and "The Earl of Old Town". It wasn't unusual to find other established folk singer/songwriters hanging out, such as Bonnie Koloc, Michael Smith, (the writer of the song, "The Dutchman", covered by Steve Goodman and others), Tom Dundee, Kendell Kardt, Jim Post, Ed Holstein (the writer of the song "Jazzman", covered by Pure Prairie League), Claudia Schmidt, Steve Goodman and John Prine. Those were true halcyon days for Chicago folk singers - kind of like the early 1970's were for singer/songwriters in Austin.
One amazing thing about John Prine was his eponymous first album. Every song on that album is as good or better than most songwriters ever compose. Among my favorites from that album is the song, "Far From Me" with Leo Leblanc on steel:

The news made for a sad night.
He will be missed by so many of us.
Sent out a prayer last night for his soul and his family.
He'll never be replaced, but I expect him to be a great influence to lots of future song writers.

My Dad was born and raised in Madisonville, Kentucky (Hopkins County} which is next to Muhlenberg County. When he first heard John Prine sing "Paradise," he was amazed. He said that had to be written by somebody from that area (John's parents were from Muhlenburg) because of the details.
Dad and his father and uncle used to take their boat down to Paradise and the Green River and spend Sunday afternoons shooting pop bottles that they'd float in the river. And there were plenty of snakes in and out of that river. He said John had it wrong about "the world's largest shovel," though. It was actually a "drag line," but was the world's largest at the time. Technicalities, but apparently a big deal to those in the coal trade as my family was.
Anyway, what a great song writer and performer. Glad I have his records!
