One of my best friends died today, far too young. Musically, Mark was a primarily a fine blues and roots guitar player, although he did own and sometimes play a lap steel given to him by his dad, who played steel going back to the 40s in and around Pittsburgh & Greene County PA.

For many years, Mark led Queen Bee and the Blue Hornet Band, who played all over the northeast and mid-Atlantic, often playing with a who's who of the blues scene. After moving on from there to spend more time with his family, he started and played with several roots/Americana/blues bands, and did music with kids and wrote children's books with a musical emphasis.

In 1995, almost 25 years ago to the day today, he and I started what was originally a vintage guitar store, Alley Cat Music, here in State College. We did that together for 5-6 years, at which point I went back to my technical work and he continued on until bowing out last year.

His death leaves a big hole in the music scene here. I'm personally having a lot of trouble processing this, but I guess life has to go on. But not the same.

RIP, buddy.

Sorry for your loss Dave. I watched some Blue Hornet Band on Youtube today. A good band and Mark was a great player. I'll be thinking about him when I strum my Harmony Rocket tomorrow night.
