has anyone had any luck replacing these with a higher gear ratio tuner? where would you find replacements?

Hi Alex, I think the cost of replacing the tuning keys on a Fender 400 would be too expensive. I don't know if a modern tuning key, as you described, would fit the existing Fender tuning pan.???
