Looking at buying a 1949 National Double 8. Wondering about buying strings. Can you get sets of strings,or do you have to buy singles of individual gauges to make the sets ?

Kevin,

There are lots of string sets available, depending on the tunings you choose. Here's a link that can get you started. Andy Volk's book shown there can be very helpful. Some sets are sold right here on the forum - see top of page - and other sites like Just Strings also have sets by tuning.

There are a few lap steel string sets, although most are for 6 strings. But there are a few 8 string sets. SIT/Scotty's set is most common, and you can even buy them here through the forum I think (click "Strings" up above).

Buying individual strings is also an option, and I've gotten to where I do it more for some instruments. There may be a few people in the steel guitar world who sell their own string sets also.

If you can't find 8-string lap steel sets here on the Forum, they are available elsewhere.

The SIT site shows 8-string sets for A6, C6, E7, and E13:

https://sitstrings.com/products/pedal-steel-lap-steel/non-pedal-lap-steel

You can purchase any/all of them from JustStrings.com:

https://www.juststrings.com/sitstringsnonpedallapguitar.html

John Pearse 8-string sets for Am7, C7, C6(x2), and B11 can also be found at JustStrings.com:
