Big fan here... was fortunate to see him in the '70s in a beautiful concert hall with the "Milestone Jazzstars" (Sonny Rollins (!), Ron Carter, Al Foster). Then at the small Catalina club in Hollywood in the '80s with a trio (from about 5 feet away), and then again at another concert hall in Nashville a few years later. Always overwhelming technically/musically, and very moving. One of the greats for sure, IMHO. |

I saw him once in 1974 at Keystone Corner, a small jazz club in San Francisco. Stone cold genius. I used to haunt that club and also saw Miles,Freddie,Benson,Mingus,Roland Kirk and many other jazz greats in their prime perform there. Almost all of them gone now. |
