If you are referring to the Stereo Steel combo amp, it has a power amp with 2 speaker output jacks. I assume you mean bypassing the SS power amp and only using the preamp to feed powered speakers. You could probably use a wire from the “SEND” jacks to the powered speakers.

Do not run a wire from the SS speaker output jacks to powered speaker input jacks. What type of powered speakers are you referring to?

Jack -

I've exchanged emails with Gerry Walker on this very topic.

Use the S. S. pre-amp out(s) to each powered speaker cabinet(s).

thanks for the help and advice. i am thinking about using a couple of cabs, one is the powered extension for a session 2000, the other would be powered house speakers for my pa system, they are like 1000 watt cabs. also what cables do u use? would it need to be a regular guitar cable or would u use speaker cables?....thanks jack

Cables from a preamp out to a powered speaker needs to be a shielded guitar cable.

I don't have one, but pictures seem to show two XLR outputs on the right side of the back labeled "low Z Output"

Would you not just use these with an XLR mic cable to go to one of the XLR inputs on the speakers?

Yup. If the stereo steel has XLR outputs, that's what I would do.

Connect the outputs marked Balanced to your powered speakers with XLR microphone cables.
Connect the Unpowered Speakers to the speaker outputs using either Speakon cables (the locking sockets at top) or the 1/4 sockets at the bottom using speaker cables NOT guitar cables

Jack the manual

https://www.rockvilleaudio.com/content/Manuals/RPM870_Manual_v2a_HR.pdf

The manual seems to have some inaccuracies in the description item 41 describes the rear outputs as line level balanced, when they are clearly High level outputs for UNpowered speakers to be used as main or Front of House Speakers (FOH)

Despite being labeled main, the top XLR outputs appear to be intended for stage monitors

The pictures of typical setups appear to be correct

i have everything plugged in as described above, and everything works as far as speakers sounding good. but the problem is there is no control on the unpowered speakers that are plugged in on the back with speakon cables. the sliders control the mains and the monitors, but there is nothing i have tried that controls the monitors separately....any help will be appreciated....thanks jack

It is a strange setup, the manual says that knob 19 controls the headphones and monitor output, perhaps this is the one?

Looking at the block diagram it seems there is no independant control between output to the XLR outputs or the rear outputs. Both come off from after the main sliders, with the output for the rear panel going through the power amps then straight to the speaker connections
Your only real option to batance between the output levels would be to adjust the volume controls on the powered speakers
