Stu, BMI was originally designed and built by Zane Beck - Beck Musical Instruments. They were well designed, simple mechanism underneath, and worked well. I had one for about three years. It played easily, was solid, and sounded good, had a Bill Lawrence pickup on it. I bought it used, and it had a lot of wear on it, and only three knee levers, so I traded up. I haven't seen any of the BMI's being built today, but I think the gentleman building them has been involved with BMI for a long time, and knows what he is doing. If you do a search in the archives, I am sure there is a lot of information available on BMI.

I believe before BMI, it was Zane Beck's name on the steels, till he pased away at least. But his legacy lives on happily, with a hardcore group of believers here.
I played Brad Sarnu's at ISGC and really enjoyed it,
while trying out the Black Box the 1st time.

Hey Stu, I've had mine for over 15 or 16 years now and have no intention of ever getting rid of it or "trading up" as someone said. Mine is a S-12 which has 8 floor pedals and 5 knee levers. I bought it used for $1200 in the consignment room at Scotty's convention around 1989 or '90 I believe. When I got it, it had 7 floor pedals and 6 knee levers but I took one KL off as it was an additional RKR inside which was just to hard to use. About a year ago I sent the guitar to Don Fritsche in Arkansas to be totally rebuilt and another floor pedal added in the 9th position for the Ralph Mooney E to F# change on the 4th string. My guitar sounds as good as any I've ever heard and plays better than most of 'em out there. It was built by Zane Beck and he was a master builder to say the least. I'm proud to play one of Zane's creations......JH in Va.

Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!!

I've been playing BMI's since '77 and they're great. I also have an Anapeg and was recently given a Sierra by a dear friend. All great guitars. The BMI is durable and accurate and extremely well designed and manufactured.
