Okay, I've got it bad for a baritone lap steel...

If you have or have had one, any recommendations you can make on scale length, wood choice, etc?

Any builders who routinely make them?

Any info/thoughts would be terrific.

What exactly is a baritone lap steel? I am guessing it has a lower voice? I have made only 22.5" scale lap steels and used a C6 tuning. If that is the case what would a C6 lap steel be considered? A soprano lap steel, a tenor? What would comprise a baritone lap steel?

Do you mean an electric or an acoustic? I have a Burgin baritone Weissenborn which I custom ordered with the same scale length as a cello (27.5" if I remember correctly). It's great, and made from Sapele. Here is his website:

Here are a couple of tracks I play the Burgin baritone Weissenborn on:

Cheers,

Fredrik

Bill - Lots of tuning options for a baritone. In my case it would likely be a low C tuning of some kind but the jury is still out.

Fred - I'd love to have a baritone acoustic. I LOVE that sound. But I'm looking for an electric. That would, at least, be likely to earn its keep for me.

Marv Fluger made me this one based on an idea I had. I doubt he’s making more at this time, however. It has an undersaddle pickup as well. The Alumitone blends well with it. No preamp needed. 27” scale. Hipshot flippers change it from DGDGBD to CGCGCD(or E). It’s a thin hollow body. 1 3\4 “ I believe

27" scale length would be my recomendation for a low C tuning to get you good tone without too much stretch

Chris Fouke builds a baritone. I believe that he sells kits too. Perhaps he can put together a cool kit for you?

I took a standard 6-string electric guitar (Danelectro U2), raised the nut, tuned it open E low bass (intervals like low bass open G): BEBEG#B

Growly.
