I recently purchased a West Coast lap steel and immediately changed the string gauges to the following, as I like fatter strings for more mellow tone...am I doing damage to this steel by using these gauges since it is a short scale ??

.014, .017, .021, .026w, .030w, .036w, .042w, .052w

this was from John Elys website, but I didnt take into consideration the scale length...none broke putting them on, but am I putting strain on anything.

Thanks in advance for any advise.

With short scale, pitch/string gauge being the same, you will have less tension than longer scale. If anything you could probably go up in gauge. I would not worry about damage to the instrument, to be sure.

Here's a set for A6 8 string, you're right in the ballpark and if anything, a bit lighter gauge than you could potentially go.

I play 22.5" instruments and use the heaviest of each of Joe's suggestions so for A6 I have a .015 on top.

Your gauges should work fine though - I wouldn't bother to change them.

You definitely don't need to worry that they are too heavy.

Those are good, you can even bump the skinny C# and E up a gauge if you want. I just got into this tuning and im hooked,I'll always have one around in A6 now.

dont know much about the construction of the steel you have, but with the scale at 22.5, you can indeed use larger strings on it with no issues. post a pic of the guitar if you like.

Nic, thanks for posting the link to the set of SIT 8 string A6 strings. They look like they would work for the Leon McAuliffe E13 tuning too. Have any of you tried tuning your 8 sting A6 tuning to the the McAuliffe E13? If so, how did it it work out?
