I was inspired by the SWSGA event and purchased a lap steel and wonder why I ever dropped it for a while...its been about a year since I touched one. I enjoy playing A6th and C6th the most...Hawaiian tunes, standards, western swing and good ol' Hank Williams tunes. Would enjoy hearing from anyone with common interest...I like talking non-pedal steel and am not in a town where there are any other steelers. Send me a pm or respond on here. _________________ Zum Encore, Remington D8 non pedal, Hallmark Mosrite clone, Gretsch 6120 DSW, Gretsch G5210T-P90 Electromatic Jet Two 90,1976 Ibanez L5, Eastman archtop, Taylor Dreadnaught, Telonics pedal, Squire Tele, Squire Strat, Fender Tonemaster, Gold Tone 5 string banjo, Little Wonder tenor banjo, 3 Roland cubes 30s and 80, Carvin combo bass amp

Hi Larry and welcome back to lap steel. Judging by the number of topics within this group there should be plenty of chat.
I am in the UK and started getting seriously in to lap steel about 5 years ago on a George Boards 8 string. Then ventured on to a National D8 without legs and was so impressed I found another one with legs that needed some TLC. Now the proud owner of a Remington double 8 steelmaster. Just love that guitar.
My styles vary from swing to emulating pedal steel but really love all things non pedal. Have to be honest though - I don't do any Hawaiian - and don't really know why. I spend most of my time woodshedding so any tune that sounds nice I will play on steel. C6 and E13 are my tunings.
Hope you enjoy your return visit. _________________ MSA Classic 12 string Universal, Remington Steelmaster D8, National D8 Console x 2, George Boards Lap Steel, National New Yorker. |

I regularly play two lap steels. One is 22 1/2 inch scale and the other is 24 1/4 scale. 6 strings tuned to C6th CEGACE. Tons of fun with those. I love pedal steels so much but sometimes I don't have time to do regular maintenance and keep them going but lap steels can be a little less work and I like that (opinions may vary there) |

I’ve played PSG casually for some years and recently realized I just can’t devote the time to be comfortable again on a bandstand. I did research and realized, for me anyway, non-pedal is where it’s at. I can focus on Western swing, still do some some traditional country, and (as a future New Orleans resident), expand into jazz. I’m really excited about the prospects: PSG gave me a solid foundation in hand skills and techniques and I have a good knowledge of music theory fundamentals, so I think I can do what I haven’t done is years: have fun instead of fretting over every single aspect of everything I’m doing.
After tons of reading I settled on the 8 string A6 tuning and couldn’t be more excited. I’ve got a solid lead on a Fender D8 in great shape and looking to emulate a lot of what (former fellow Wisconsinite) Eddie Rivers is doing. He’s fantastic, and I’ve turned into a huge Western swing fan. Not only are bands like Asleep at the Wheel making some incredible music, but they look like their loving every minute of it. Another advantage to the A6, from my reading, it compliments dobro patterns and I started on dobro about 6 months ago, so why not make my life easier?
Here’s to the non-pedal steel players! I look forward to the curve in my musical conquests and spending a lot more time in this forum chat room. _________________ Mullen G2; Fender Tone Master Twin Reverb; Goodrich L-120 |

I had never touched a tonebar until I purchased a student model pedal steel in the late seventies, and immediately started on lessons. I had four excellent instructors during my first year or so, and never looked back. I quickly outgrew the student model and acquired a pro instrument that I still play. Nowadays, I hardly ever touch my pedal guitars. The gaggle of lap steels stashed throughout my humble hovel are just too dang fun to play. |

Lots of interesting stories here ! Thanks for your contributions to this thread. By 1967 I had played guitar for a couple of years and was teaching guitar at a studio and the owner was a steel guitar player and my guitar teacher as well. He was teaching a student how to play "steelin the blues"...when I heard that I was hooked and took lessons from him on steel also...he sold me his steel, which was a Fender Stringmaster Quad for $150...I didnt realize or appreciate what I had and got hooked on the pedal sound and traded it back to him for a Fender 400...dang I wish I had that quad still...mostly because it was his ! It had the push buttons to switch necks and I know he was playing it in 1956...here is a picture of him playing it:
